Job Overview
A semi‑senior accountant or accounts assistant role in a well‑established general accountancy practice. The position can be full‑time or part‑time (four‑day schedule) with hybrid working options. The successful candidate will take full ownership of bookkeeping, payroll, and year‑end file preparation, working independently and supporting a collaborative small team.
Responsibilities
* Manage the full bookkeeping cycle for multiple businesses, handling day‑to‑day data entry through year‑end partner review level.
* Perform thorough bank, supplier and customer reconciliations and maintain control accounts.
* Prepare and submit accurate VAT returns in accordance with statutory and practice guidelines.
* Produce precise bookkeeping records suitable for management reporting and year‑end accounts.
* Run periodic payrolls for clients using Xero and other systems linked to IRIS.
* Prioritise workloads across multiple clients (non‑audit) to meet all external deadlines comfortably.
* Collaborate with the small team, supporting departmental goals and upholding high professional standards.
Requirements
* Prior dedicated bookkeeping and accounts preparation experience in a general practice setting.
* Proven experience handling periodic payroll functions for external clients.
* Strong technical knowledge of cloud bookkeeping systems; Xero proficiency/certification is a distinct advantage, with familiarity of IRIS software.
* Experience managing accounts and workloads for multiple businesses simultaneously.
* AAT Level 2 or Level 3 (part‑qualified or fully qualified) is required.
* Valid United Kingdom work authorisation and fluency in English.
* Ability to commute to an office located between Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard; a driver’s licence and own vehicle are highly desirable due to limited public transport.
