Network Rail High Speed Ltd. (NRHS) is responsible for operating and maintaining the UK’s only international high-speed railway (HS1) owned by London St. Pancras Highspeed. The 109km London St. Pancras Highspeed infrastructure consists of a diverse range of railway assets such as the track, signalling, overhead line, lineside buildings, depots, viaducts and long tunnels. NRHS is also responsible for operating and maintaining three international stations; St Pancras, Stratford and Ebbsfleet International. As a wholly owned subsidiary of Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd, NRHS is privately financed under an agreement with our client London St. Pancras Highspeed, undertaking a diverse range of activities from railway infrastructure maintenance and operations – through to station facilities management and retail on behalf of our client.

Brief Description


The role

We are seeking an experienced Asset Engineer (Signalling & Telecommunications) to assist the Senior Asset Engineer with the management, assurance and long‑term stewardship of Signalling, Telecoms and Control Systems across the HS1 route. This role is central to ensuring the reliability, safety and performance of the UK’s only international high‑speed railway. You will contribute to renewal development, engineering assurance, standards compliance, incident response and asset lifecycle planning.


You will focus on:

* Ensuring long-term safety, reliability and performance of HS1’s S&T assets
* Developing and documenting the renewal and enhancement requirements tailored to the HS1 system
* Leading or supporting the engineering assurance across the S&T asset base
* Supporting the maintenance delivery, configuration management and supplier interfaces
* Contributing to the technical governance, asset strategy and lifecycle planning.


Key responsibilities include:

* Leading the development of S&T renewal, refurbishment and enhancement requirements for S&T assets.
* Maintain Network Rail High Speed’s prioritised S&T work bank.
* Contributing to the S&T elements of the HS1 Route Asset Management Plans.
* Providing engineering assurance, through
* Acting as the sponsor, where appropriate, project engineer or DPE for S&T project schemes.
* Ensuring compliance with HS1 standards and processes.
* Reviewing and aiding with the acceptance of the designs, technical submissions and non-compliance applications.
* Supporting and contributing to the technical governance and configuration assurance.
* Supporting and challenging the S&T maintenance delivery teams through audits and inspections.
* Monitoring trends across the S&T asset range, including:
* UM71 and HVI track circuits.
* KVB train protection.
* The signalling Route Control Centre system (RCCS), the Electrical Mechanical Maintenance Information System (EMMIS), the Ventilation Control System (VCS)) and other control/management systems.
* Telecoms backbone, including:
* Operational telephony.
* MPLS‑TP data transmission network.
* Analogue and digital radio systems.
* Fibre networks and associated infrastructure.
* Leading or supporting investigations into S&T incidents, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
* Providing authoritative engineering advice in the S&T discipline.
* Collaborating with suppliers, maintenance delivery teams, train operators and London St Pancras High Speed Ltd.
* Providing technical briefings and supporting safe and compliant delivery.
* Maintaining accurate configuration records for HS1 S&T assets.
* Review monitoring outputs and supporting the maintenance and renewal planning.

The person

So, who are we looking for? If you can match the essential criteria below, then we look forward to receiving your application.


Essential Criteria

* Strong background in Railway signalling engineering.
* Substantial experience in signalling and telecoms engineering (preferably high-speed).
* Understanding of TVM430 / KVB or equivalent high‑integrity signalling systems.
* Experience in S&T asset management, engineering assurance or system stewardship.
* Knowledge of S&T safety, standards and technical rules in use on HS1.
* Degree in a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
* Incorporated Engineer status (or equivalent professional competence).
* Membership of a relevant institution (e.g. IRSE, IET, IAM).


Desirable Criteria

* Experience with HS1 systems and operational environment.
* Experience of working in a concession or regulated safety-critical environment.
* Understanding of high‑speed interoperability and related standards.
* Knowledge of project development, commissioning and asset integration.

We follow a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the following pay range:

Salary range: £43,588‑£51,719 (dependent on skills and experience)
