Overview

Waters Corporation is a global leader in the design and manufacture of analytical laboratory instruments, software, and consumables. We are currently seeking a Research Senior Scientist to work within the mass spectrometry research team based at our MS Technologies Centre in Wilmslow, UK. In this role you will contribute to, and help shape the future of, Waters mass spectrometry technology, address customers' challenges and advance the frontiers of science in a wide range of disciplines. This includes undertaking research and development into all aspects of cutting-edge mass spectrometry technology, including quadrupole mass filters, time-of-flight mass spectrometers, charge detection (Fourier Transform) mass spectrometers and ion mobility separators.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

1. To undertake research and development into the next generation of Waters mass spectrometry technology, working with engineers to produce prototypes to deliver proofs of concept for commercial development
2. Understanding Waters customers’ evolving needs
3. Building an understanding of the relevant underlying physics of innovative technology
4. Ion optical modelling
5. Design, construct and evaluate complex technology and concepts
6. Hands-on experimental work
7. Continuous learning to stay abreast of latest technology, including attending and presenting at international scientific conferences and interacting with customers and collaborators
8. Presenting results to internal and external audiences
9. Participate in agile teams across mixed disciplines
10. Contribute towards Waters’ IP portfolio

Qualifications

Qualifications and desired skills:

11. Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering discipline and five years mass spectrometry or ion mobility hardware development experience or higher degree and two years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
12. Good problem solving skills
13. Excellent communication and decision-making skills

This role will also provide the opportunity to build your skills in the following areas:

14. Scientific/engineering programming
15. Mathematical modelling
16. Ion optical modelling
17. Use of advanced test equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes)
18. Data analysis
19. Vacuum technologies
20. Ionisation techniques

Any previous experience in these areas is desireable but not essential as long term mentoring will be provided.
