Fire Protection Risk Engineer – Technical Lead
Role Description
We are looking for a Fire Protection Loss Control Engineer, having a focus on Automatic Sprinkler Protection and other forms of fixed Fire Protection / Suppression, with previous experience in Property Risk Engineering and / or a background in the Automatic Fire Sprinkler industry.
Reporting to the UK Loss Control Engineering, Technical Property Manager, you will be responsible for assisting the UK Loss Control Engineering team, providing loss control expertise, support and assistance to our customers and to assist Allianz underwriting in risk selection and retention.
You’ll provide ongoing co‑ordination and monitoring of loss prevention activity, the servicing of assigned accounts and loss control survey work. You will develop and maintain professional working relationships with our Underwriting, Distribution, Communications and Claims teams, as well as with our clients and brokers. Passionate about your fields of expertise, you will track technical developments and share knowledge with colleagues, looking for continual improvements in risk assessment criteria and tools in close alignment with Claims and Underwriting teams.
This is a home‑based role, requiring UK wide travel; though primarily covering the Midlands, North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Responsibilities
* You will be up to date with, and ongoing development of your knowledge, in respect of Automatic Sprinkler protection standards and testing. Knowledge and understanding of LPC Rules for Automatic Sprinkler Installations (incorporating BS EN 12845) essential. Knowledge of NFPA13 / FM data sheets an advantage.
* Liaising and collaborating with underwriting account and claims teams, aiding the development and implementation of underwriting strategy and standards in respect of technical developments, testing standards and establish lessons learned, etc.
* Able to complete sprinkler drawing design reviews / prepare suitable outline sprinkler specifications.
* Supporting the Technical Property Manager in the development and maintenance of technical training guidance and technical manuals.
* Supporting the Technical Property Manager in the design and delivery of technical learning and development skills within area of specialism for the wider Loss Control team.
* Carry out technical assessments and apply risk control measures for insured risks via; desk top reviews, on‑site and remote surveys, for a wide variety of trades and industries. Able to attend site visits with brokers and clients to provide guidance on technical enhancements/improvements and thereby reduce the risk of property and business interruption losses.
* Work with underwriting, clients and brokers to develop customised loss control engineering programmes. Generate and review required reports and recommendations, presenting results to Underwriters, clients and brokers.
* Follow up on developments in your area and proactively engage in knowledge exchange with expert groups, providing support for training internal customers and external clients.
* Proactively support the development of data‑based tools for simplified and optimised risk analysis.
Essential Skills
* An experienced Property Loss Control Engineer with competency in Fire Protection / Suppression and / or a Fire Protection Loss Control Engineer, within the insurance industry, or a sprinkler systems engineer / designer working in the sprinkler industry.
* Additionally, a thirst for developing new skills in this sector.
* Open‑mindedness and curiosity with a commitment to remaining up‑to‑date with developments in this specialist field.
* Suitable and sufficient knowledge of LPC Rules for Automatic Sprinkler Installations (incorporating BS EN 12845), plus NFPA13 / FM Data Sheets would be an advantage.
* Knowledge of other fire protection systems, including water mist, gas suppression and kitchen fire suppression, would be an advantage across a wide range of industries.
* A strong, customer centric approach.
* Project planning and implementation.
* How risk management and / or the insurance processes work in detail, having been in the industry or close to it.
* High proficiency in MS Excel and PowerPoint is essential.
* Digitalisation projects and data analysis.
Desirable Skills
* Responsible Artificial Intelligence usage.
* Holding (or progress towards) ACII, IFE ( if working in insurance).
* LPC Basic and Intermediate (advantageous) if from the sprinkler industry.
