Here at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), we are going through a period of growth, and we are looking to expand our team of in-house legal experts.
In this newly created role, you will work closely with the Head of Legal to help shape the future and direction of the department, whilst providing broad legal support to LSTM’s academic and professional services teams across the business.
You will also provide oversight to LSTM’s research contracts team and act as an escalation and referral point for non-research matters. You will be comfortable leading contract negotiations with partners, collaborators, service providers, and consultants, on a range of commercial contracts both within the UK and globally.

We operate a hybrid working style, and the successful candidate would be expected to be based in Liverpool.
Your role will include, but not be limited to:
* Providing high-quality, pragmatic legal advice and support to all functions of LSTM, including overseas subsidiaries and projects where necessary.
* Managing a team of four research associates and serving as the first point of escalation for team matters.
* Offering specialist legal support in areas such as HR/employment, construction, real estate, company law, charity law, GDPR/data protection, IP, and IT, either directly or via external lawyers.
* Drafting, negotiating, and advising on various commercial contracts and related issues.
Ideally, you will be a qualified solicitor with experience in private practice, in-house, charity, public authority, or educational sectors. You should demonstrate substantive experience in commercial contract law, including negotiation, drafting, and advising on contracts.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
* An undergraduate degree in law (LLB) or a relevant field at minimum qualification level.
* Completion of the Legal Practice Course, Bar Vocational Course, or equivalent, and qualified to practice as a Solicitor or similar in England and Wales.
* Experience in a professional legal or contract role.
* Team management experience.
* Experience reviewing, drafting, and negotiating a variety of contracts.
* Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, practices, and procedures.
* Experience handling complex legal issues across different types of organizations, including charitable and non-profit entities.
* Ability to manage large, complex matters from start to finish on time and within budget.
* Excellent writing skills for preparing high-quality reports, presentations, and briefings for senior audiences.
