Deputy Principal Reports To: Grade 7 Investigations Department Main Duties The post holder will lead and develop a team of investigators and support staff to deliver high performance and ensure investigations are conducted fairly, thoroughly and independently in accordance with the Office standards and guidance. This role also involves the post holder leading serious and complex investigations. This will require contact with a wide range of people such as bereaved families, police officers and local communities. As part of the 24 hour on-call rota, the post holder will need to be prepared to respond to serious incidents at any time and make decisions in respect of deployment of resources. Simultaneously, they will be central to the organisation during a time of ongoing transformation making a significant contribution to the Offices strategic direction. Key Responsibilities To perform the role of Deputy Senior Investigation Officer (DSIO) on critical or significant incidents. The DSIO is responsible for assisting the Senior Investigation Officer (SIO) in managing the investigative response, and all resources associated with the investigation. To lead, inspire and develop a team of investigators, providing coaching, support and feedback where required to deliver team objectives and ensure the welfare of staff. To lead by example in the creation and maintenance of an environment in which Police Ombudsman staff feel valued, respected and encouraged to contribute to the effective operation of the organisation. To supervise investigations and quality assure files of evidence to the Public Prosecution Service, Coroner, and Chief Constable. To ensure a victim-led approach is adopted to all investigations. To allocate work to team members, oversee their progress and ensure balanced workloads. To collaborate effectively with fellow team managers to support departmental efforts and contribute positively to its success. To ensure performance appraisals of staff are undertaken on a timely basis in line with guidance from Human Resources and are evidenced in a sustainable manner. To liaise with other bodies or organisations as appropriate, building and maintaining effective relationships with key stakeholders and relevant organisations. To have responsibility for all records held, created or used as part of the business, including corporate and administrative records whether paper-based or electronic and also including emails, in line with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. To ensure compliance with Section 75 duties of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 by having due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity between: Persons of different religious belief, political opinion, racial group, age, marital status or sexual orientation; Men and women in general; Persons with a disability and persons without; Persons with dependents and person without. 12. To commit to the values, ethics and service standards that underpin the work of the Office. 13. Any other relevant duties appropriate to the grade as may be required. Essential Criteria Must have at least 2 years experience of conducting criminal investigations[1] Experience of leading a team/or managing/developing staff members Experience of writing complex and detailed investigation reports Be prepared to join the Senior On-call Rota and to carry out DSIO on-call duties as required. Have or be prepared to obtain SC level security vetting. Hold a valid driving license An investigation conducted with a view to it being ascertained whether a person should be charged with an offence, or whether a person charged with an offence is guilty of it.
