Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon-Pelvic&Acetabular Trauma Surgery

We are looking for one whole‑time Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in Trauma, Pelvis and Acetabular surgery to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. This post would include primary lower limb arthroplasty at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield Elective Orthopaedic Centre.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full‑time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Should any further vacancies arise shortlisted applicants will be considered.


Main duties of the job

The appointed Consultant will primarily focus on General Trauma with a sub‑specialist interest in pelvic and acetabular surgery with an elective practice in Lower Limb Arthroplasty. The role includes the following responsibilities:

* Join 2 existing colleagues to manage the pelvic and acetabular trauma. The appointee should be able to manage complex acetabular fractures, including fix and replace and pelvic ring injuries.
* Undertake complex fracture care. Specifically, we require that the appointee be capable of undertaking complex internal fixation of femur, tibial plateau and plafond fractures, humerus and forearm. Skills in advanced nailing techniques of the long bones are required.
* Share responsibility with colleagues for weekday trauma and fractured neck of femur operating lists.
* Conduct elective outpatient clinics and elective operating sessions.
* Provide cover for consultant colleagues during periods of absence.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full and Specialist registration (with a license to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
* Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview.
* If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
* FRCS (T&O) or equivalent.
* MD or PhD or equivalent.


Clinical Experience

* Have completed at least 1 year Fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma with P&A surgery.


Research

* Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate.
* Publications in Peer‑reviewed journals.


Teaching and Training

* Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels.
* Qualification in Medical Education.


CPD

* Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months.
* Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio.


Management and Administration

* Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management.


Clinical governance and Audit

* Experience in performing clinical audit.
* Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project.


Personal Attributes

* Good oral and written communication skills.
* The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC' good medical practice (2013).
