Deputy Department Manager

An exciting opportunity has become available to join our team on the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) at the Sunderland site. The EAU is a 40‑bed unit located within the Emergency Care footprint. The unit works closely with the Emergency Department, providing high‑quality care to patients presenting with a wide variety of medical conditions in an acute fast‑paced short‑stay environment.

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic deputy department manager who is passionate about delivering excellent patient care while supporting the team to maintain the high standards of the department.

Core responsibilities include:

* Co‑ordinating the flow of patients from the emergency department to the emergency assessment unit and into specialty wards, ensuring timely, safe and effective care.
* Supporting daily operations of the department, ensuring smooth running and continuity of service.
* Providing leadership and supervision to staff, including allocation of duties, supporting performance management and contributing to training and development.
* Maintaining service quality and safety, ensuring compliance with NHS policies, clinical governance and regulatory standards; contributing to audits and improvement initiatives.
* Promoting a positive patient experience by addressing concerns, supporting compassionate care and helping deliver service improvements.
* Contributing to performance monitoring, tracking KPIs, and supporting actions to address performance issues.

Key qualifications and requirements:

* Registered nurse.
* Excellent management and leadership skills.
* Experience at band 5 level in an acute care setting.
* Willingness to work flexibly in response to changing circumstances.
* Good understanding of the goals and strategic direction of emergency and urgent care.
* Good understanding of patient flow.
* Evidence of continuous professional development; degree level study or evidence of working toward.
* Degree in nursing studies or healthcare‑related subject, or evidence of currently working towards one (UK equivalent).
* Mentorship certificate, Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
* Management and leadership training.


Person Specification


Experience

* Experience as a Band 5.
* Experience of leading a team.
* Evidence of innovation in practice.
* Experience of coordinating a team in caring for patients from admission to discharge.
* Expertise within the speciality.
* Experience of line management of staff.


Physical Skills

* Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.


Skills & Knowledge

* Awareness of national health and social care policy.
* Knowledge of best practice in area of specialism.
* Thorough understanding of expanded roles/professional practice issues.
* Clinical teaching experience.
* Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.
* Able to work without supervision.
* Competent in the use of IT packages.
* Evidence of competency in relation to nursing practices appropriate to the post.
* Understanding of budget and financial control systems.


Qualifications

* Degree in nursing studies or healthcare related subject or evidence of currently working towards this (UK equivalent).
* Mentorship certificate / Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
* Management and leadership training.
