Job Purpose
The Head of the SHEQ is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving the Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) strategy, policies, and management systems, across tbf Traffic, tbf Scaffolding and BTS Group Ltd.
This role also leads the company’s sustainability and ESG agenda, ensuring regulatory compliance, driving performance improvement, and embedding responsible, ethical, and sustainable practices throughout the businesses.

Strategic Leadership
Develop and implement the overarching SHEQ strategy in line with business goals to foster a, proactive, and compliant culture.
Provide expert direction on UK health & safety, environmental, and quality legislation.
Governance, Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, NHSS 12A/B) and industry standards.
Lead proactive incident prevention, ensuring risk assessments, safe systems of work, and control measures are consistent and effective.
Operational Oversight
Lead the SHEQ team, oversee site inspections, risk assessments, and manage accident/incident investigations and corrective actions.
Performance Monitoring
Establish and maintain systems for monitoring, analysing, and reporting on SHEQ performance metrics
Produce Group SHEQ reports for the Board covering KPIs, leading indicators, trends, and improvement actions.
Training & Communication
Develop and deliver training programs, including toolbox talks and safety briefings to improve awareness.
Deliver behavioural safety programmes tailored to each business unit’s risk profile.
Drive training, competency frameworks, and assurance processes for operational staff.
Stakeholder Management
Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory bodies, clients, and internal teams regarding SHEQ matters
Environmental & Quality Leadership
Oversee environmental programmes:
* Biodiversity protection during vegetation works
* Pollution prevention and waste reduction
* Carbon and energy reduction initiatives
Lead implementation of quality management systems and customer assurance.
Ensure continuous improvement across all SHEQ disciplines.

Challenge unsafe acts, behaviour & conditions across the BTS

Keep abreast of industry best practice in areas of expertise and strive to continually improve operations to deliver a superior service
Actively partake in Continuous Professional Development, as industry and profession dictates, taking ownership of personal training & development to demonstrate full commitment to the scheduled programme of training and development for this role.
Ensure inter-department & cross department Health & Safety communication is effective
Carry out additional and reasonable job-related tasks as requested by your manager, in line with the needs of the business.

Working Conditions
Outline the general working conditions the role will attract, i.e. office based, field based, requirement to travel, etc.
The role is predominantly office based however this will be a requirement to visit site on occasion

Essential Criteria
Possession or attainment of the NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
Chartered IOSH or IEMA membership
Senior SHEQ leadership experience in high-risk operational sectors (construction, utilities, highways, arboriculture, scaffolding, or similar).
Proven track record managing SHEQ for multiple business units or a multi‑discipline organisation.
Strong working knowledge of UK H&S legislation and best practice
Experience in overseeing ISO standards 14001, 45001 and 9001
Experience of managing and mentoring H&S professionals.
Good computer skills
Driving licence
Strong incident investigation and root cause analysis capability.
Excellent leadership, influencing and communication skills.
