About the Role
We are growing Health and Safety team and looking for an experienced Senior Health and Safety Advisor/ Consultant to provide expert advice, guidance, and leadership on all Health & Safety matters to ensure compliance with UK legislation, industry standards, and internal policies. The role supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organisation’s H&S management system and safety culture across projects, sites, and operations.
Responsibilities involve:
Health & Safety Leadership
1. Act as a senior point of contact for all H&S matters across allocated sites or business areas.
2. Provide competent advice in line with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, relevant regulations, and best practice.
3. Lead the implementation and monitoring of the organisation’s H&S policies, procedures, and standards.
4. Champion a positive safety culture and mentor junior advisors and operational staff.
Risk Management & Compliance
5. Conduct and review risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work (SSOW).
6. Support the development and review of RAMS and permit-to-work systems (where applicable).
7. Ensure statutory inspections (., fire safety, LOLER, PUWER, COSHH, legionella, asbestos) are completed and documented.
Incident Management & Investigation
8. Lead or support the investigation of incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
9. Produce detailed reports, root cause analyses, and corrective actions.
10. Ensure timely completion of follow‑up actions and lessons learned.
11. Support RIDDOR reporting where required.
Monitoring, Auditing & Reporting
12. Carry out regular site inspections, behavioural observations, and compliance audits.
13. Produce monthly H&S performance reports, trend analyses, and KPIs for senior leadership.
14. Support ISO‑aligned management systems (., ISO 45001, 14001 if applicable).
Training & Competence
15. Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings, and H&S awareness sessions.
16. Identify training needs and support development of competency matrices.
17. Coach and influence managers, supervisors, and teams in safe working practices.
Emergency Preparedness
18. Assist in the development and review of Emergency Response Plans and business continuity arrangements.
19. Ensure drills, testing, and emergency training are completed and documented.
Stakeholder Engagement
20. Work collaboratively with project managers, facilities teams, contractors, and clients.
21. Attend coordination meetings, pre‑start meetings, and design risk reviews.
22. Liaise with enforcing authorities (HSE, Fire & Rescue Service, Environmental Health) when required.
What are we looking for?
Skills and Experience
Essential
23. NEBOSH Diploma (or working towards) / NVQ Level 5/6 in Occupational H&S.
24. CertIOSH minimum; CMIOSH preferred.
25. Strong working knowledge of UK H&S legislation and industry standards.
26. Proven experience advising, auditing, and guiding H&S practices in a similar environment.
27. Experience conducting incident investigations and writing high‑quality reports.
28. Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder‑management skills.
