Job Description
Reporting directly to the Head of People Services HR and as part of the Group HR team. The UK Head of Pensions is initially a UK focused role but with likely scope to globalise. An integral member of the Pensions Policy Committee (PPC) and accountable to the Group HR Director. Pension strategy
- responsibility for developing and delivering pension strategy in relation to all pension arrangements that the group's companies participate in, including public sector schemes.Supporting the Company objectives in relation to those schemes. Engaging and influencing stakeholders to support pensions strategy across the UK. Networking on pensions strategy with those responsible for pensions in the organisation's JV's.
Pensions policy
- responsibility for leading on development of best practice policy to be applied across the business. Provide direct input into the overall employee package relating to pension offering for all employees.
Pension activity and management
- for all core activities of the Pensions function such as pensions meetings, agendas, minutes etc
Function support
- budget and cost centre management
Relationship Management
maintaining close working relationship with other functions and colleagues, particularly HR, Reward, Finance, Company Secretary and the members of the Pensions Policy Committee (PPC)
System management
- updating and utilising the systems for reporting and governance purposes,and using it to produce relevant and insightful analysis and reporting by working closely with the relevant regional HRSS/ITSS teams
Third party supplier management
- maintaining a close working relationship and managing the services provided to the group by the entire range of advisors/consultants and pension scheme providers,administrators etc.
Supporting preparation of key pensions documentation
- ownership of all pension related documentation produced by the organisation e.g. on-boarding, general communications and the preparation of papers required for the PPC and its related sub-committees.
Pensions best practice and regulation
- supported by advisers, where appropriate, industry groups and liaison with the Pensions Regulator/Ombudsman to provide internal input to shape pensions policy and strategy
Risk management
- advising on risk associated with existing pension schemes and any bid/rebid/M&A activity including disposals, especially where involving DB and/or public sector pension schemes. Responsibility for maintaining the Pensions SMS documentation up-to-date and relevant (and development, where necessary); engaging with business leaders and their bid teams with the aim of ensuring compliance with the SMS.
Continuous improvement
- takes the lead on continuously assessing opportunities to continuously improve processes, systems and related pensions
Subject Matter Expertise
- the lead point of contact for all pensions related input e.g. bids, TUPE,M&A activity including disposals. Liaison with the Pensions Regulator, where required.
Life cover
- inputting into the policy on life cover levels for employees, including the 'excepted' scheme, and the associated insurance arrangements

Essential technical and professional skills, knowledge and qualifications for the UK Head of Pensions
3. A professional qualification relevant to pensions, and continued membership of the professional body(e.g. Pensions Management Institute)
4. Building and leading a global network of Pension/Superannuation related experts to drive consistency of approach across Serco Group
5. Self-motivated and able to enjoy working independently and as part of a small, close-knit team
6. Excellent attention to detail
7. Highly organised - able to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively within required deadlines
8. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - establishing relationships both internally and externally at all levels
9. Core IT skills essential, particularly MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
10. Experience of dealing with the public sector in the context of pensions aspects of bidding, and transfers from and to public sector schemes desirable.
11. Experience of pensions in the context of bidding, TUPE transfers and M&A activity including disposals
12. Previous experience in pensions role with strategy and policy responsibility in FTSE 250.
What's on Offer
The successful candidate for the UK Head of Pensions role will have the chance to lead the UK Pensions agenda / team for a large multi 10k UK headcount whilst being offered the chance to work on a hybrid basis out of any of the offices across the UK (London, Birmingham, Home Counties etc). The role will pay £100,000 to £120,000 + Car and Bonus
