Junior Data Center Engineer
Location: Canary Wharf, London
Employment: Permanent
Salary: £40,000-£55,000
Shifts: Mon-Fri Days & Night with on call duties every other weekend
***Somebody with around 12-18 months Data Center experience would be ideal***
Summary
The Data Center Technician will handle the setup, maintenance, and support of servers and network infrastructure within a data center environment. This position involves hardware installation, structured cabling, inventory tracking, and managing the logistics of incoming and outgoing equipment.
Key Responsibilities
* Install and secure servers, storage units, and network switches according to established procedures.
* Manage copper and fiber cabling with precision and organization.
* Conduct regular inventory checks, update asset databases, and resolve any discrepancies.
* Oversee shipping and receiving operations, ensuring accurate labeling, packaging, and documentation.
* Work closely with operations, security, and facilities teams to maintain smooth workflows.
* Troubleshoot hardware and cabling issues, escalating complex problems to senior staff.
Required Qualifications
* High school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications such as A+ or BICSI Installer I are advantageous.
* Minimum of one year of practical experience in a data center or comparable IT environment.
* Ability to safely handle heavy equipment and perform tasks at height.
* Familiarity with logistics, shipping processes, and inventory management systems.
* Comfortable working in varied temperature environments and on rotating shifts.
Technical Skills
* Knowledge of structured cabling standards for Cat6/Cat6a, single-mode, and multi-mode fiber.
* Experience using cable testers, crimping tools, and rack installation equipment.
* Basic understanding of server hardware, including RAID setups, blade servers, and rack PDUs.
* Experience with asset management software and barcode scanning.
* Awareness of ESD procedures, safety practices, and personal protective equipment requirements.
