Applications are invited for an 8‑session locum general paediatric consultant post at the Children's Hospital for Wales, Cardiff. Specialist interests in neurology, allergy, and gastroenterology are welcomed.
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated professional to join a team of 11 Consultant General Paediatricians delivering the full scope of general paediatric care required for the Children's Hospital, an integral part of the University Hospital of Wales.
Paediatric outpatient services are provided at the Children's Hospital for Wales and University Hospital Llandough, and community paediatric services are offered at both Llandough and St David's Hospital. The department collaborates with primary care colleagues to deliver outpatient care closer to home within the GP clusters.
Applicants should be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of the expected receipt of a CCT/CESR(CP) at the time of interview.
Main duties of the job
* Provide, together with consultant colleagues, a service in the speciality to the designated hospitals, responsible for prevention, diagnosis, treatment of illness, and promotion of health.
* Assume continuing responsibility for the care of patients in charge, liaise with consultant colleagues, and ensure the proper functioning of the department in line with operational policy and strategic plan.
* Supervise and manage resident medical staff, being named in their contracts as responsible for overseeing training and advising doctors regarding careers.
Job responsibilities
* Participate in and contribute to Clinical Audit in line with the Health Board's policy on Clinical Governance.
* Cover the on‑call rota for designated hospitals as required; the current commitment is 1 in 8 and may change with service need.
* Carry out teaching, examination, and accreditation duties, and contribute to postgraduate and continuing medical education activities and audit locally and nationally.
* Co‑operate with local management for efficient service delivery and share medical contributions to management with consultant colleagues.
* Participate in the Clinical Directorship system and maintain close liaison with appropriate colleagues.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Essential: Full GMC Registration with licence to practise.
* Desirable: Higher degree (MD or PhD).
Experience
* Essential: Broad training and experience in general paediatrics; demonstrates clear potential for independent consultant practice.
* Desirable: Specialist interest to complement the department’s work, especially in unscheduled care.
Skills
* Essential: Evidence of effective team and MDT working.
* Essential: Effective and demonstrable communication skills.
Clinical Governance
* Essential: Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding of its role in improving practice.
* Essential: Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation (or equivalent).
Research
* Essential: Ability to critically appraise research.
Teaching
* Essential: Evidence of teaching medical students, resident doctors, and PAMs.
