Consultant Anaesthetist – Paediatric Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics & Surgery

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Consultant in Paediatric Anaesthesia with a special interest in paediatric neurosurgery, orthopaedics, and paediatric surgery. The successful candidate will be based mainly at Oxford but will also provide input across all Trust sites, including John Radcliffe, Churchill and Horton Hospitals and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
Key Responsibilities
* Operate fixed theatre teams for paediatric neurosurgery, orthopaedics, and general surgery, including emergency and neonatal procedures.
* Provide flexible cover for paediatric lists across non‑cardiac specialties.
* Participate in on‑call duties within the paediatric anaesthetic group.
* Engage in teaching and training of clinical students, junior doctors, and NHS training programmes.
* Take part in clinical governance: audit, quality improvement, risk management and accreditation activities.
* Maintain and develop personal and professional practice through appraisal and continued education.
* Support management activities and administrative duties associated with patient care and service running.
* Contribute to research and peer review activities within the Trust and national bodies.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Training – Essential
* Medical qualification acceptable to the GMC.
* GMC specialist registration or within 6 months of admission to the GMC’s specialist register by closing date.
* Minimum 6 months experience in anaesthesia within the NHS.
* FRCA or equivalent fellowship.
* CCT in anaesthesia or equivalent.
Qualifications & Training – Desirable
* Postgraduate qualifications such as MD, MSc, or PhD.
* Additional advanced training or fellowship in a relevant sub‑specialty.
* Life‑support instructor qualification (APLS/EPALS etc.).
Experience – Essential
* Independent consultant‑level practice in paediatric anaesthesia and teamwork.
* Experience in anaesthesia for neonatal surgery with advanced training evidence.
* Management of neonatal emergency surgery independently.
* Minimum of 12 months advanced specialist paediatric anaesthesia training as a senior trainee or post‑CCT fellow, or equivalent.
* Minimum 3 months experience in paediatric or neonatal critical care or transport services.
* Demonstrated ability to make decisions at consultant level and manage complex clinical problems.
Experience – Desirable
* Anaesthesia for paediatric craniofacial and/or neurosurgery.
* Qualification or experience in paediatric regional anaesthesia.
* Consultant‑level experience in paediatric and neonatal anaesthesia.
Skills & Knowledge – Essential
* Leadership, decision making, and authority at consultant level.
* Strong administration and time‑management skills.
* Training in clinical management.
* Knowledge of NHS framework and clinical networks.
* Understanding of a regional paediatric referral centre’s complexities.
* Effective teamwork contribution.
* Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
* Experience in teaching and training activities.
* Commitment to clinical governance, risk management, audit and quality improvement.
* Ability to peer review clinical research and participate in research activities.
Skills & Knowledge – Desirable
* Leadership of a clinical team at consultant level in a teaching hospital.
* Leadership and management qualifications.
* Experience in NHS management projects and change implementation.
* Financial and budgeting knowledge.
* Willingness to undertake additional roles locally, regionally and nationally.
* Information technology proficiency.
* Educational qualifications relevant to teaching.
* Evidence of leading audits, quality improvement projects, monitoring compliance.
* Peer‑reviewed publications and research grants.
Other Requirements – Essential
* Full registration and licence to practise.
* Full UK driving licence.
