About the role
The Senior Quality Engineer leads quality assurance and improvement activities across Cycling category covering Kids Bikes & Scooters, Electric Bikes and Cycling Accessories. Ensuring products meet Halfords’ standards for safety, compliance, reliability, and customer satisfaction. This role provides technical leadership and supervises Quality Engineers and Assistant Quality Engineers.
Key responsibilities
Category Quality Leadership
* Act as the technical expert for the Cycling category.
* Lead risk assessments and quality planning.
* Champion quality strategy and improved ways of working.
* Build strong working relationships with HGS partners.
* Travel within the UK, Europe and Asia to support development and sourcing.
* Represent Halfords at industry events and committees.
* Support the Head of Quality with policy, regulation, data analysis and governance.
Technical Governance & Approvals
* Approve specifications and communicate with suppliers the key deliverables.
* Develop test plans in accordance with project and category requirements.
* Ensure ongoing compliance in line with current and future legislative developments.
* Make release decisions for complex/high-risk products.
* End-to-end compliance ownership.
* Lead supplier audits and preventative action plans.
* Approves improvement plans from the supplier root cause analysis reports.
* Agree critical control points for supplier KPI reporting.
* Own supplier performance KPIs and identify opportunities for improvement.
* Lead complex root cause analysis and corrective actions.
* Identify additional preventative action plans.
* Prepare executive-level quality reports.
Coaching & Team Development
* Mentor Quality Engineers and Assistant Quality Engineers.
* Identify development opportunities for the team.
* Support cross-functional quality training.
* Lead improvement initiatives with multi-category impact.
About you
* An established understanding of compliance standards across all bike categories, including kids bikes & scooters, e‑bikes and cycling accessories
* Hands‑on experience in building, inspecting and evaluating bikes
* Confident communication skills, enabling clear collaboration with suppliers and the wider HGS team
* The ability to represent the business within relevant industry bodies, such as the Bike Association
* Proven experience in leading, motivating and developing a team
* A leadership style that sets the tone by leading from the front
