Overview
The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an Executive Agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. Our diverse teams of over 3,000 skilled professionals safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of our environment and the economy.
We are seeking a Microbiology Scientist to join our Department of Bacteriology in the Exotic Bacteria Workgroup. The group delivers a wide portfolio of science focusing on exotic bacterial pathogens which threaten animal and public health. Activities include delivering or overseeing diagnostic testing in support of control programmes, international reference laboratory functions and underpinning research. Your work will help ensure GB remains free of these diseases and capable of responding if known or new exotic diseases emerge.
Responsibilities
* Support a number of Reference Laboratories for exotic bacterial pathogens ensuring laboratory capability is in place, with tests validated and accredited.
* Support legislative, training and international outreach requirements around these laboratories.
* Deliver or oversee diagnostic testing in support of control programmes.
* Contribute to international reference laboratory functions and underpinning research.
* Participate in activities that help ensure GB remains free of exotic diseases and that the ability to respond to known or new threats is maintained.
Qualifications & Experience
* Strong science background with relevant experience and a broad knowledge of bacteriology.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

* Starting Salary: £37,480

Other Information
The Weybridge site is a strategically important asset as a reference laboratory supporting the Government’s response to emergencies including disease outbreaks. All post holders based at the APHA Weybridge site must hold a valid Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) security clearance or above. Applicants must be currently in the UK and have a minimum of 3 years continuous UK residence.
