Overview

2 programmed activities per week (1 day)

This post is a 24 Month Fixed Term / Secondment position. As per the Fixed Term Contracts Policy, where individuals with continuous service within the NHS apply for fixed-term contract roles, NSS reserves the right to refuse any such appointment.

The Organisation

National Services Scotland (NSS) is a national NHS Board operating at the heart of NHS Scotland, providing support and advice at strategic and operational levels. NSS supports customers to deliver services more efficiently and effectively and offers shared services on a national scale using best-in-class systems and standards. Our priority is to improve the health and well-being of the people of Scotland by partnering with colleagues across Health and Social Care to deliver fit-for-purpose solutions and systems, delivering high quality services that help stakeholders free up resources for essential services.

The Post

National Services Scotland (NSS) seeks to appoint a Consultant in Medical Microbiology to support strategic and operational activity undertaken by NHS Scotland Assure within the Antimicrobial Resistance & Healthcare Associated Infection (ARHAI) Scotland service.

ARHAI Scotland is a clinical service within NHS Scotland Assure, providing national expertise for infection prevention and control (IPC), antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and healthcare-associated infection (HAI) for Scotland. ARHAI Scotland aims to reduce infection burden and antimicrobial resistance by establishing a robust evidence base, monitoring key priority areas, and collaborating with NHS Boards, care providers and other national bodies as commissioned by the Scottish Government.

ARHAI Scotland consists of a multi-disciplinary team of experts in infection prevention and control and antimicrobial resistance. Externally, the post will interact with a wide range of stakeholders and service users, including antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, IPC, Scottish Diagnostic laboratories and AMR reference laboratories, and networks such as the Scottish Microbiology and Virology Network.

The Candidate

The post holder should have an enthusiastic approach, excellent organisation and communication skills, and work well as part of a multi-disciplinary team. It is essential to demonstrate NSS values of respect and care, openness and integrity, customer focus, commitment to colleagues, and a drive to excel and improve.

The post holder will play an important role in activities to support the Scottish One Health Antimicrobial Use and Antimicrobial Resistance programme in ARHAI Scotland. Substantial experience in antimicrobial resistance practice within the UK NHS (or broadly equivalent roles) and practical experience in facilitating changes in clinical practice are required.

Appropriate governance for professional responsibilities and outputs for this post will be agreed with the successful applicant, including line management.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme/Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who has lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.

The post is subject to the terms and conditions of service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff and Doctors in Public Health and the Community Health Service (Scotland) Consultant Grade. Candidates must have current GMC registration at the time of applying.

Location and Working Pattern

This is a national post. The contract location is Delta House, Glasgow, with hybrid working and significant scope for working from home. The post holder will travel to hospital and elective care centre sites across Scotland; some travel between NSS sites may be required.

This is a fixed-term or secondment opportunity for 2 programmed activities per week (1 day) to be worked flexibly during Monday to Friday with no requirement for on-call rota participation. If taken as a secondment, candidates must have the support of their employing Health Board.

You must reside within the UK for the duration of employment with NSS.
