JK Rail Ltd are seeking an experienced and versatile Maintenance / Fabric Engineer to join our expanding team. This role supports planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance works across the UK rail network and associated infrastructure, ensuring that operational assets remain safe, functional, and compliant. The position is offered on a self‑employed basis, with a fully equipped company van and tools provided. Candidates must be capable of working independently and representing the company to a high professional standard across various client sites.
Key Responsibilities
* Respond promptly to reactive maintenance works, ensuring issues are resolved safely and efficiently.
* Liaise directly with client representatives and station managers regarding maintenance and repair activities.
* Assist with minor projects, refurbishments, and fit‑out works as required across operational sites.
* Conduct general building fabric maintenance, including timber works, flooring and tile repairs, wall repairs, and ceiling reinstatements.
* Carry out installation, repair, and maintenance of internal and external doors, including timber, fire‑rated, steel, composite, and security doors.
* Respond to emergency callouts across stations and depots where required – including faults on locks, digi‑locks, security doors, and access systems, or other urgent maintenance requirements.
* Maintain high presentation standards for work areas, vehicles, and equipment.
Qualifications and Requirements
* To be over 21 years of age.
* To hold a clean, valid UK driving licence.
* Demonstrable experience in carpentry, joinery, and door maintenance across commercial, industrial, or rail environments.
* To hold a City & Guilds or NVQ Level 2/3 in Carpentry, Joinery, or Building Services (or equivalent).
* A strong understanding of Health & Safety practices, including COSHH, Working at Height, and Risk Assessments.
* To already hold, or be willing to obtain, a valid PTS (Personal Track Safety) Certification.
* To demonstrate a professional attitude, taking pride in high‑quality workmanship and maintaining the standards expected under the JK Rail brand.
* To uphold the company’s values of respect, reliability, and safety, maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues, clients, and members of the public.
* To be self‑motivated, organised, and capable of working independently or as part of a team.
* To be willing to travel and work across multiple sites, occasionally staying away where required.
Desirable, but not essential
* Valid PASMA certification.
* Working at Height and Asbestos Awareness training.
* Manual Handling and First Aid qualifications.
* Experience working in live railway environments or other safety‑critical sectors.
* Familiarity with digital reporting systems (PDAs, mobile apps) for work tracking and documentation.
