The Opportunity
Abbott Rapid Diagnostics (formerly Alere) is part of Abbott’s Diagnostics family of businesses, bringing together exceptional teams of experts and industry leading technologies. Abbott Dundee manufactures a range of high‑value biologics that are essential for producing advanced diagnostic tests. These biologics include Bioconjugates, Enzyme Concentrates, and Antibody‑Coated Particles. Their production involves sophisticated biochemical techniques, specialized equipment, and must be carried out in a cGMP‑compliant environment by highly skilled professionals. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a brand‑new Principal Scientist Biologics to join the new Biologics department.
What You’ll Do
* Oversee biologics production in a cGMP‑compliant environment, ensuring schedule adherence and budget compliance.
* Monitor and review process parameters (KPVs, CQAs, CPPs) for consistency; authorize interventions as needed.
* Maintain accurate documentation and manage ERP transactions for inventory and work orders.
* Lead workload planning for yourself and Scientist IV Biologics; represent the site in best practice forums and stakeholder reviews.
* Apply problem‑solving skills to resolve technical issues, manage CAPA activities, and review quality incidents within defined timelines.
* Design and conduct experiments to improve processes; implement Leader Standard Work within the Management Operating System.
* Support additional responsibilities (e.g., Health & Safety, Fire Marshal) and ensure compliance with corporate policies.
Preferred Profile/Qualifications
* Minimum of a BSc in Biochemistry or a related field to ensure strong technical knowledge for biologics production. PhD preferred to ensure that the job holder has sufficient technical knowledge to effectively provide day‑to‑day oversight of biologics production.
* Technical Experience – hands‑on experience with various biochemical techniques, including:
o Bioconjugation
o Protein Purification
o Particle Coating
o SDS‑PAGE
o Western Blotting
o HPLC
* Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for data analysis and presenting results.
* Skilled in completing records such as manufacturing batch documents, lab reports, and quality documentation.
* Prior experience working in a scientific or lab‑based role.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Process & Quality Knowledge – understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques, awareness of manufacturing costs and how to manage them, familiarity with Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA) and Change Control processes, ability to use Root Cause Analysis tools like A3 and DMAIC, knowledge of Risk Assessment, Risk Management, and Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), understanding of Process Validation principles and ability to carry them out.
