An exciting opportunity has arisen for dynamic and innovative Maintenance Shift Technicians with an Electrical or Mechanical background to join University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. The core duty of the role is to carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks on environmental engineering plant and equipment, ensuring the efficient operation of heating, air conditioning, fire alarm, specialist healthcare and other engineering systems.
Responsibilities
* Carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks on environmental engineering plant and equipment, including heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, medical gas, nurse call, fire detection, building services controls, standby generators and specialist healthcare equipment.
* Diagnose and repair faults in mechanical, electrical devices and control systems.
* Ensure compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.
* Act independently in a leadership role supporting Estates Supervisors and Maintenance Managers.
* Assist with the management of contractors.
* Work a rotating shift pattern (4 on 4 off) and provide emergency out‑of‑hours on‑call support.
* Carry out work in accordance with current legislation, codes of practice and best practice guidance.
* Work safely, observing Health & Safety policies and procedures.
* Work efficiently using technology to meet Service Level Agreements and Key Performance Indicators.
* Communicate failures and non‑conformities to line manager.
* Act professionally when interacting with patients, visitors and staff.
* Contribute to CAFM system, keeping records up to date and readily available.
* Conduct dynamic risk assessments for all work, including manual handling.
* Supervise and organise Estates work in a hospital environment, allocating resources as appropriate.
* Work autonomously using the Trust Facilities Management System to allocate PPM and reactive work requests.
* Liaise with area users to organise shutdowns of critical patient support systems.
* Communicate effectively with wards and departments regarding Estates issues.
* Interpret instructions, drawings and specifications for electrical or mechanical installations.
* Educate and support less‑trained colleagues, passing on knowledge.
* Manufacture, design, assemble, erect and install new work on complex equipment, using judgement and precision.
* Problem‑solve technical issues and fault‑diagnose mechanical and electrical systems.
* Observe statutory and relevant requirements, especially Health & Safety codes of practice.
* Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance and day‑to‑day duties on boilers, water testing, stripping, fire alarm systems, batteries and uninterruptible power supplies.
* Use the Trust Facilities Management System for recording, updating and auditing estates records and compiling Plant Histories.
* Conduct surveys for future maintenance, alterations or improvements and prepare technical reports.
* Perform work of other estates trades as required.
* Utilise communication devices (PDA) to respond to reactive requests, planned maintenance and emergency breakdowns.
* Participate in on‑call/shift rotas and be prepared to work hours required in emergencies.
* Respond to switchboard and building management system alarms (fire alarms, lift trappings, medical gas alarms, boiler alarms).
* Use BMS system for first‑line plant fault diagnosis and performance monitoring.
* Collect and analyse data from Building Management System and security equipment.
* Control the actions of untrained personnel during lift emergencies, ensuring passenger safety and coordinating lift services.
* Actively participate in administration: complete paperwork, job dockets and timesheets.
* Attend regular team briefings.
* Adhere to Trust policies, appraisal system and personal development planning.
Qualifications
* Electrical or Mechanical background with relevant practical experience.
* Strong knowledge of environmental engineering systems such as heating, cooling, refrigeration, medical gas, nurse call and fire detection.
* Competence in diagnosing and repairing faults in mechanical and electrical systems.
* Understanding of the Trust Facilities Management System and CAFM usage.
* Ability to conduct dynamic risk assessments and maintain health & safety compliance.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Strong teamwork and leadership ability in a multidisciplinary environment.
* Flexibility to work rotating shifts (4 on 4 off) and to respond to out‑of‑hours on‑call duties.
