REPORTS TO: Principal
Professional Duties of a Teacher
Regulations
(NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5
1. Exercise of general professional duties
2. A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as required, under the reasonable direction of the principal or the employing board, including:
* (a) Employment as a teacher in a school under the principal’s direction;
* (b) Employment by a board without a fixed school assignment, under the direction of the board and the principal of any school where required.

2. Teachers shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the employing board, including:
* (a) Teaching and preparing courses and lessons;
* (b) Assessing and reporting on pupils’ development and progress;
Additional Responsibilities
1. Planning
2. Developing courses, teaching students, setting and marking work, and recording progress.
3. General
4. Promoting pupils’ well-being, providing guidance, communicating with parents, and participating in meetings.
5. Assessment/Reporting
6. Contributing to assessments, reports, and references.
7. Staff Development
8. Participating in staff development schemes, reviewing teaching methods, and contributing to course development.
9. Discipline/Health and Safety
10. Maintaining discipline, safeguarding health and safety, and participating in school meetings related to curriculum and organization.
11. Public Examinations
12. Preparing pupils for exams, assessing, reporting, and supervising during exams.
13. Management and Administration
14. Contributing to staff appointments, managing other teachers, and participating in curriculum and pastoral activities.
15. Working Hours
16. Full-time teachers work 195 days per year, with specific hours and breaks as detailed, not exceeding weekly teaching hours.
17. Staff Cover
18. Providing cover for absent teachers within specified conditions.

Section 1 - Essential Criteria
* Qualifications: Recognized teaching qualification for Northern Ireland.
* Experience: At least 2 years of teaching experience, using diverse strategies, digital media, and contributing to review processes.
* Registration: Registered with GTCNI before appointment.
Section 2 - Additional Essential Criteria
* Knowledge of the NI Curriculum, safeguarding, SEND Code of Practice, teaching strategies, IT systems, and assessment methods.
* Skills: Effective classroom management, inclusive teaching, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
* Values: Reflecting school ethos and values, with details available on the school’s website.
Section 3 - Desirable Criteria
* Experience in delivering music education and relevant qualifications; leadership training or postgraduate qualifications in educational leadership.
