Specialty Registrar

This 6‑month position supports the clinical and research needs of the department and is suitable for someone seeking sub‑specialty experience in Medical Retina. The post holder will have required ophthalmology skills including slit lamp examination, fundus examination, OCT interpretation and retinal laser. They will have the opportunity to work in specialist AMD, Diabetic, Uveitis and Retinal Genetics clinics alongside Retinal consultants and discuss cases during the Retinal MDT meetings once a week. There are ample teaching sessions, specialist MR teaching sessions once a week and the opportunity to present in regional North East Retina Group (NERG) meetings twice a year. Sunderland Eye Infirmary is fully equipped with a twin main theatre suite and offers the possibility of surgical training based on the professional needs of the successful candidate.

You will have current GMC registration and prior UK ophthalmology experience. A completed MRCOphth or equivalent and full general ophthalmology experience are essential. Applicants should provide evidence of ongoing professional development and possess good interpersonal and communication skills.

Main duties of the job

We have many exciting things going on at Sunderland Eye Infirmary, one of the few specialist eye hospitals in the country. The new hospital will strengthen our reputation across the NHS as a centre of excellence for ophthalmology care. The Medical retina department consists of 6 WTE consultants (including VR and Medical Retina). The hospital is equipped with modern imaging cameras, electro‑diagnostic testing in house with referral to the regional lab if needed, a newly acquired B‑Scan ultrasound machine with specialist ultrasound clinics once a week, a pattern Argon laser machine and Heyex 2.

Job responsibilities

* Support the consultants to meet Trust targets for new patients and maintain the 18‑week RTT standard.
* Support the consultants to comply with the NPSA directive for review patients, avoiding cancelled follow‑ups.
* Maintain high levels of patient satisfaction by helping provide a safe and sustainable service.
* Assist the consultants in the medical and surgical management of medical retina and glaucoma patients, audit outcomes and compare to current standards.
* Help with teaching and training junior doctors, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and medical students.
* Actively participate in service development within the sub‑specialty and across the ophthalmology unit.
* Participate in outpatient clinics or sessions at Sunderland Eye Infirmary Outpatients department; location to be discussed based on service needs.
* Attend internal CPD sessions held in the Ophthalmology Department.
* Participate in the emergency on‑call rota.

Teaching and Education

* Experience supervising junior medical staff.
* Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.


Management and Administrative Experience

* Understanding of NHS, clinical governance process and resource issues.
* Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding of management goals.
* Evidence of organisational, management and time‑management skills.


Audit and Research

* Apply research outcomes to clinical practice.
* Involvement in quality improvement measures.
* Conduct multi‑disciplinary audit in specialty area.
* Experience of clinical research.
* Research published in refereed journals.


Qualifications

* Primary medical qualification.
* Full GMC registration and licence to practice.
* Previous ophthalmology experience.
* Knowledge of local primary care.


Clinical Experience

* Perform full ophthalmic examination including slit lamp examination and indirect ophthalmoscopy.
* Interpret ophthalmic imaging and visual fields.
* Post‑graduate ophthalmology training.
