Join Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust as a Band 5 Staff Nurse in Pre-operative Assessment. The post is based at The Alexandra Hospital, Redditch, with 22.5 hours per week (part-time). Countywide working will be required to cover leave. The Trust offers flexible shift patterns (Monday - Friday) and a range of clinics to support learning and development.
Job Summary
Would you like the opportunity to join us as a Band 5 Staff Nurse? We are recruiting talented, committed individuals who share our vision, values and professional ambition. The Pre-Operative Assessment Department provides assessments for a variety of surgical procedures across the county. You will be mentored and supported to learn the role and may rotate through Pre-op Assessment sites (KTC, WRH, The Alex).
Responsibilities
* Act as a named nurse within a team nursing framework, accountable for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care.
* Provide compassionate care and place patients at the centre of care.
* Educate patients and carers about their care; communicate with the Multi-Disciplinary Team to ensure high-quality patient care.
* Maintain and develop clinical competence and professional awareness; supervise and educate unqualified staff and students.
* Encourage new ways of working and speak up about concerns; rotate through Pre-op Assessment Countywide (KTC, WRH, The Alex).
* Ensure provision of accurate pre-operative information and documentation via Synopsis; conduct holistic clinical assessments and timely onward referrals.
* Safeguard vulnerable adults; promote healthier lifestyles and health promotion to maximise every contact.
* Ensure follow-up and discharge planning prior to admission; liaise with Consultants regarding surgical cancellations.
* Develop and sustain knowledge and skills in line with PREP requirements; maintain a professional portfolio with reflective practice.
* Share skills with the team; contribute to research and development; participate in handling complaints per Trust policy; engage in preceptorship and mentorship.
* Assist in training of student nurses and healthcare assistants; undertake assessors training as required.
* Be mindful of budgeting and economy in ordering and using equipment; support clinical/shift management within the department when required.
* Assist in assessing staffing requirements and maintain safe staffing levels; participate in daily huddles to ensure effective communication.

Person Specification
Essential
* Experience of working in acute care settings.
* Experience in surgery or medicine; development of clinical skills and professional competence.
* Evidence of continuing education for more experienced Band 5 nurses in specialty.
* NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work toward within 18 months of commencing.
* Ability to undertake countywide work.
Desirable
* Significant proven knowledge and experience in Pre-Operative Assessment or transferable skills.
* Phlebotomy
* Ability to take ECGs
