Note: This is a fixed‑term contract for 2 years, with the potential to become permanent, working Monday to Thursday 08:00–16:00 and Friday 08:00–15:00 with the option to work between and if company requires

We are looking for a self‑motivated Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join our Engineering team at the Port of Barrow. This is a hands‑on role supporting port operations by maintaining, repairing and improving a wide range of plant, equipment and infrastructure.

This role would suit someone with a strong mechanical background, excellent fault‑finding ability, and the right attitude to work independently in a demanding operational environment.

Key Responsibilities

7. Carry out planned maintenance, breakdown repairs, refurbishments and installations to maximise plant and equipment performance.
8. Respond to breakdowns and emergency situations during normal working hours and on an out‑of‑hours call‑out basis.
9. Work on a wide range of equipment including dock gate machinery, cranes, vehicles, hydraulics and general infrastructure repairs
10. Assist Engineering Maintenance Supervisors in identifying future maintenance requirements.
11. Support deckhand cover when required.
12. Use the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to extract work orders, complete tasks and record work history.
13. Work alongside external contractors and key suppliers (e.g. UDS, Bay Towage).
14. Undertake and review risk assessments to facilitate safe maintenance activities.

Skills & Experience Required

15. NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
16. Proven maintenance experience in an industrial environment
17. Strong fault‑finding and diagnostic skills
18. Experience working on mechanical plant and infrastructure
19. Good safety awareness and understanding of risk assessments
20. Ability to self‑supervise and work on own initiative
21. Computer skills with experience using CMMS systems
22. Strong communication skills
23. Right attitude – self‑motivated, reliable and team‑focused
