Managing Marine Consultant - Water/Sediment Quality Specialist (Mid-Senior Level)
Join ERM as a Managing Marine Consultant focusing on water and sediment quality. You will deliver high‑quality marine water/sediment quality Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and related reports for a range of clients across marine aggregates, offshore wind, oil and gas decommissioning, tidal energy, subsea cables, coastal engineering and ports/harbours developments.
Responsibilities
* Prepare desk studies, scoping reports and full EIAs, with a focus on water/sediment quality and WFD compliance.
* Provide specialist advice to UK and overseas operators, governments and regulators.
* Support proposal writing and contribute to survey design.
* Maintain high standards in report writing and data interpretation.
Essential Qualifications
* BSc or MSc in a relevant technical subject.
* Experience across industries such as oil and gas, CCS, renewables, and aggregates.
* Robust scientific understanding and track record in:
o Delivering WFD compliance assessments for marine and freshwater waterbodies UK and EU wide.
o Plankton and biogeochemical cycles, including water chemistry.
o Water discharge advice including Offshore Chemical Notification Scheme (OCNS).
* Knowledge of the UK’s marine biodiversity, EUNIS marine habitat classification, and marine biodiversity legislation.
* Understanding of sublittoral benthic survey design and marine biota survey data.
* Extensive experience using standard MS Office.
* Awareness of European and domestic legislation concerning marine conservation.
* Enthusiastic attitude and willingness to learn.
Desirable
* 5+ years professional experience in marine consultancy or a technical marine field.
* Comfortable using AI for research and workflow management.
* Experience in petroleum exposure risk assessment and EBVs.
* Experience in chemical risk assessment and toxicity modelling (CHARM, Osborne‑Adams).
* Ecotoxicology knowledge.
* Project management experience, meeting budgets and timeframes.
* Background in chemical oceanography.
* GIS experience (ESRI ArcGIS or QGIS).
* Public speaking experience.
* Specialist marine sector knowledge.
* Understanding of Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRAs) and Marine Conservation Zone Risk Assessments (MCZ).
* Fieldwork experience in sampling, data collection and collation for environmental surveys.
