We are seeking an experienced psychiatrist to lead our team across our female-only Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit and acute ward. This role requires a dynamic and inspiring leader who can foster a professional, open culture that empowers our clinical staff to provide exceptional, compassionate care.
As the Consultant Psychiatrist, you will be a visible and influential figure within our hospital. You will work collaboratively with a multi-professional management team, ensuring that our care meets the highest regulatory standards. Your leadership will be key in shaping the strategic direction of our unit, always prioritising safe, effective, and individualised care for every patient.
Main duties of the job
In collaboration with other clinical colleagues and managers, your role will involve helping to develop a comprehensive treatment service that seeks to deliver a high-quality response to those suffering from a range of mental health problems based on quality-assured, evidence-based practice. You will be responsible for providing advice regarding the psychiatric care of clients within your service area and will entail taking overall responsibility for a defined caseload of patients.

Baldock Manor is a 40-bed hospital in north Hertfordshire that provides specialist psychiatric services for adults. The hospital has two female PICU (Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit) wards and two acute wards.
Our PICU services provide care and support for women at crisis level with a severe mental disorder who require rapid assessment and stabilisation.
Our acute wards care for older adults, usually 55 years or older, who need a short-term hospital stay, where we can stabilise their mental health. The average stay in our acute wards is less than forty days.

Job responsibilities
In conjunction with Consultant colleagues, they will provide professional supervision to other medical staff where appropriate. They will ensure that junior medical staff's time and duties are managed to best suit the needs of the service and their ongoing training.
Participate in an out-of-hours rota with other Consultant Psychiatric colleagues at Baldock Manor Hospital.
Ensure there is adequate consultant cover across the hospital as required.
Participate in quality enhancement and service evaluation projects and undertake relevant research for service improvement.
Participate in educational and health promotion activities within the Mental Health Service and liaise regularly with General Practitioners.
Lead the CPD programme for the hospital and foster a culture of learning.
Provide professional advice to the Senior Management team and Board on service planning, clinical, and staffing issues, ensuring quality of care remains a priority.
Be a role model for effective leadership, promoting collaboration, innovation, and positive outcomes.
Provide input and advice on initiatives requiring a medical perspective, such as NICE guidelines or national inquiries.
Represent the hospital externally at local, regional, and national levels, building relationships with commissioners, community teams, and key partners.
Oversee the performance of Consultant Psychiatrists, supporting appraisal and revalidation, and addressing concerns about conduct or performance.
Maintain effective, professional leadership, providing clinical supervision and mentorship.
Support the appraisal and revalidation process for other Psychiatrists in partnership with the Responsible Officer.
Participate in recruitment and appointment of relevant staff.
Work collaboratively with patients, considering their preferences in treatment decisions and supporting informed choices.
Manage joint investigations concerning doctors, such as complaints or adverse events.

Qualifications
* Approved Clinician
* In good standing with the RCPsych
* Current GMC registration
* At least five years' experience in an inpatient setting
* Ability to make independent clinical decisions and demonstrate leadership
* Knowledge of evidence-based practice
* Effective verbal and written communication skills
* Up-to-date with current rehabilitation psychiatry practices
* Organisational and prioritisation skills
* Participation in audit
* Time management skills, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
* Analytical skills for information processing
* Experience working in Psychiatric Intensive Care and Acute services
* Teaching and research experience
