Role Overview
Supporting the Senior and Principal Lawyers to ensure the Council receives cost-effective, high-quality Employment and Education legal advice. Ensuring all work meets professional standards and client requirements.
Responsibilities
1. Carry out duties according to the Council's Policies, Standing Orders, Codes of Practice, and Financial Regulations, including required training.
2. Handle all legal work such as settling pleadings, preparing for hearings, providing advice, and representing the Council in courts, Tribunals, and Inquiries as directed by the Senior Lawyer.
3. Advise the Council on legislative and case law changes affecting the organization, staying updated on new legislation and legal developments.
4. Liaise with professional bodies, research institutions, Counsel, Council’s Chief Officers, elected members, and external organizations as needed.
5. Perform additional duties to meet service needs, which may change over time.
6. Undertake tasks and projects assigned by the Senior Lawyer following instructions.
7. Provide legal advice to Committees, sub-committees, and working parties, and prepare reports or legal opinions as required.
Requirements
1. Up-to-date, thorough knowledge of Employment and Education law.
2. Substantial post-qualification experience as a solicitor, barrister, or FILEX in employment and education law, including advocacy, preferably in local government.
3. Experience supervising and managing junior staff.
4. Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or FILEX.
5. Proficiency in Word and electronic Case Management systems.
