This post offers an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic Acute Medical team. It is suitable for candidates pursuing a career in Acute Medicine and on the Specialist Register (either AIM or GIM).
The Royal Bolton Hospital was among the first sites in Northwest England to appoint a consultant in acute medicine in 1998. Since then, we have a proud history of delivering excellent training and pioneering acute medical care. Recently, we transitioned to providing 24-hour Same Day Emergency Care, significantly improving Emergency Department performance.
In September 2025, the University of Greater Manchester will admit its first cohort of undergraduate medical students, housed in a state-of-the-art facility on the hospital grounds, offering excellent opportunities for those interested in medical education.
We seek candidates passionate about delivering acute medicine and same-day emergency care. The position is full-time with on-call commitments. Applications from those wishing to share sessions with other specialties are welcome, based on registration. Please apply via TRAC.
There may be an opportunity for the candidate to be considered for Clinical Lead in Acute Medicine after a probationary period. Currently, seven consultants provide 10-12 PAs each. The goal is for all potential admissions to have a consultant review during standard hours, available from 0800-1600 on weekdays.
Out-of-hours cover is provided on a 1 in 22 rota during weekdays and 1 in 11 on weekends, with plans to move to 1 in 8 for weekends. The AAU is covered from 1600-2000 on a rotating scheme. The Consultant on call shares care from 1300 each weekday, staying until 2000, then providing cover from home.
Plans are underway to extend the acute medicine consultants' working hours to 8 pm daily on a rota basis, with the new appointee expected to cooperate once recruitment is complete.
The unit also has a team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners supporting weekend work, up to 3 Specialist Trainees in Acute Medicine, CMTs in ACCS, 4 foundation doctors, GPST1 trainees rotating between AMU and IMC facilities, clinical fellows, senior clinical fellows, and a Senior Clinical Pharmacist supporting prescribing and discharges.
