About the Role
Essex County Council (ECC) is supporting Braintree District Council to recruit a Waste Minimisation & Sustainability Supervisor on an initial 6‑month contract. The successful candidate will need to work on‑site at least 4 days per week.
Role Accountabilities
* Team Supervision & Performance: Manage day‑to‑day operations of the team, assign tasks, monitor workloads and performance, provide regular one‑to‑one meetings and coaching, keep the team motivated, adjust staffing or processes to meet service demand, support staff development and training, and maintain high morale through team building.
* Public Engagement & Education: Lead community outreach to promote recycling and waste reduction, develop and deliver educational campaigns and events, especially for schools and youth, conduct doorstep visits to help residents with waste and recycling services, organize and promote local sustainability projects, workshops, and presentations, and work with Communications and Marketing to produce engaging publicity materials.
* Service Support & Administration: Oversee and contribute to administrative tasks, maintain up‑to‑date procedures and records, handle statutory or recurring waste and recycling operations, keep internal systems accurate, and manage key correspondence, ensuring timely, helpful responses to public queries and complaints.
* Project and Initiative Coordination: Contribute to designing and presenting waste minimisation projects that align with council environmental objectives, plan campaigns such as food waste reduction and composting promotion, use approved project management tools for on‑time, on‑budget delivery, continually improve processes for greater effectiveness, collaborate with frontline staff on practical solutions, and support implementation of new waste services or major changes.
* Customer Focus & Service Improvement: Maintain a strong customer service orientation, regularly seek feedback from residents, schools, and local businesses, use data and complaints to drive continuous improvement, keep public information accurate on the council website and materials, and simplify recycling guidance to make services more accessible and engaging.
Qualifications
* A background in waste and recycling services or sustainability is advantageous.
* Proven experience in coordinating or supervising teams and projects is required.
* Experience in community engagement or delivering educational programmes is highly desirable.
* A track record of data analysis and reporting to stakeholders is beneficial, given the roles performance monitoring aspect.
* Experience supervising or leading teams with effective outcomes and development.
* Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate at all levels.
