The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Assistant Structures Bridges Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team. The role will primarily involve working on the South West Scheme Delivery Framework for National Highways, with opportunities to work on complex schemes across the UK. As a team, we co‑locate with our client at offices in Exeter and Bristol, attending the office three days a week with the remaining days worked remotely.
The work spans from feasibility and optioneering all the way through to design and construction. We work across the National Highways network in the South West, which includes large and unique viaducts, culverts, under and overbridges of varying forms, ages, and complexities.
The Role
Our Structures Engineers play an important part within the Highways and Designated Funds Design team and alongside our client, National Highways. As an Assistant Engineer, you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of highway structures schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers. Responsibilities include:
* Working in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions.
* Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme.
* Working within a locally based technical team and taking responsibility for the delivery of your activities within a scheme project and team portfolio.
* Contributing to the preparation of bids and general work-winning functions.
* Supporting effective health and safety practices within the team.
* Experience with sustainability practices in engineering.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
What you will bring to us
* Successful completion of a Degree Apprenticeship programme or an employer‑led early careers development programme, with a degree of progress through a programme of initial professional development leading towards Incorporated or Chartered status.
* Knowledge of structures design processes and procedures relevant to the civil engineering discipline.
* Able to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working without significant supervision and moving towards overseeing more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks.
* Experienced in following procedures associated with the management of health, safety and welfare, e.g. Amey’s Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
* Knowledge and understanding of technical and specification processes and is starting to take ownership for the production of deliverables with appropriate supervision.
* Good competence with relevant software and similar analytical tools.
* Basic understanding of CDM and risk assessment, and experience in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects.
* Demonstrates a basic understanding of the different interfaces on projects.
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject.
