Job Summary
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and driven candidate to the post of a Consultant in Infection to be part of our Microbiology service. This is a new post and the successful candidate will work with a team of two other consultants, two speciality doctors and two clinical scientists to provide a routine Clinical Microbiology service for Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) and Wirral primary care. The post holder will be based at Arrowe Park Hospital, where most of the inpatient wards are located, and will be supported to develop sub‑speciality interests. Routine infection control activities will be part of the role, working alongside the named Infection Control doctor/practitioner. Out‑of‑hours on‑call will be at a frequency of 1:8 providing cross‑cover for Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust and Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Trust.
Main Duties
The post holder will work with a team of consultants, speciality doctors and clinical scientists. The core service includes pro‑active results management and advice to clinical teams, with certain serology/virology results requiring consultant input and authorisation. Referral triage is received electronically. Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is embedded, including daily critical‑care ward rounds, daily AMS rounds across the hospital and blood‑stream infection rounds. The Microbiology team provides input into a variety of MDTs: prosthetic joint infections, haematology, C. difficile, endocarditis, renal, neonatal unit and the award‑winning OPAT service. Infection prevention and control (IPC) is an integral role for the department, with all team members contributing.
Qualifications and Experience
* Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
* FRCPath or equivalent evidence.
* Medical Degree: MBBS or equivalent.
* CCT or equivalent.
* Broad knowledge in Medical Microbiology, Virology and laboratory diagnostics.
* Ability to report and advise independently.
* Experience in general microbiology on‑call rota.
* Experience in Infection Prevention and Control (including outbreaks).
* Experience in laboratory diagnostics including automation and molecular methods.
* Commitment to CPD and audit; awareness of good decision making.
* Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
* Leadership, decision‑making, responsibility and integrity.
* Effective time management and prioritisation.
* Ability to challenge professional and organisational barriers.
* Computer literacy – basic skills with EPR, LIMS, email, word processing and presentation software.
* Health clearance by Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; meets GMC professional health requirements.
Desirable Attributes

* Postgraduate teaching qualifications.
* Familiarity with Teaching – ability to train junior medical/scientific staff and laboratory staff.
