The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). We collaborate with the NHS, universities, local government, research funders, patients, and the public. The NIHR supports world-leading health and social care research that enhances health and wellbeing and promotes economic growth. We are also a key funder of applied health research in low- and middle-income countries.
DHSC contracts directly with NHS Trusts, universities, and life science organizations that host our two coordinating centers:
* NIHR Coordinating Centre (NIHRCC), hosted by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, the University of Southampton, and LGC.
* Clinical Research Network Coordinating Centre (CRNCC), hosted by a consortium of the University of Leeds and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
These centers share operational responsibility for the NIHR, directed by DHSC's Chief Scientific Adviser and the DHSC Science Research and Evidence Directorate's leadership.
Job Description
The Programme Manager will oversee the daily operations of the funding program, managing the funding process and monitoring funded projects. Responsibilities include assessing project proposals, analyzing the project rationale, and supporting senior colleagues in evaluating intellectual property (IP) and commercialization strategies. The role involves managing a portfolio of funded projects, tracking outputs and impact, and improving operational processes.
Key skills include establishing relationships with stakeholders such as entrepreneurs, academics, and clinicians, working under tight deadlines, and maintaining high-quality outputs.
Responsibilities
1. Supporting all aspects of translational research funding, including developing call themes, advising applicants, reviewing applications, managing funding committees, and providing feedback.
2. Performing due diligence on funding proposals, critically assessing scientific, technical, and clinical rationale, budgets, IP, and commercialization strategies.
3. Negotiating funding agreements, including milestones, financial terms, and reporting requirements.
4. Managing funded projects, monitoring performance, reviewing IP and dissemination plans, and handling contractual changes.
5. Liaising with stakeholders, leading meetings, representing the funder, and promoting funding programs externally.
6. Contributing to team improvements and drafting work instructions.
7. Supporting strategic initiatives within the program and department.
Qualifications and Skills
* Educated to MSc/PhD level in biomedical or health sciences.
* Experience in research management, research environment, or technology transfer.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for complex scientific, technical, and clinical issues.
* Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills.
* Effective planning and organizational skills, capable of prioritizing and meeting deadlines.
* Team-oriented with strong relationship-building abilities.
* Meticulous record-keeping and attention to detail. Knowledge of IP and commercial aspects is desirable but not essential, as training will be provided.
