Haygarth Ward is a 24‑bed specialist gastroenterology ward caring for a variety of patients with conditions such as liver disease, pancreatitis and gastric ulcers. It works closely with the adjacent endoscopy unit and the Alcohol Liaison Team, supporting patients who are detoxing from alcohol.
We are a dynamic, hard‑working team that prioritises development and values compassionate care. We are looking for a highly motivated and committed individual to join the gastroenterology team as a Junior Sister.
Main duties of the job
* Maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing and the Named Nurse initiative.
* Proactively coordinate the patients’ discharge arrangements in accordance with RUH Discharge Policy, ensuring involvement of other agencies as necessary.
* Promote a patient‑focused approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals.
* Promote and maintain effective communication within the ward/department, GPs, community staff and other hospitals regarding ongoing patient care.
* Educate patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified.
* Supervise junior staff in the delivery of care through effective monitoring, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice.
* Demonstrate effective budgeting practice, exercising care and economy, supported by appropriate documentation.
* Develop partnerships with Finance & HR and divisional management to understand resource management processes and have representation in service development issues.
Person specification
Qualifications and training
* Essential: UK registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council; evidence of ongoing continuous professional development; adult registered nurse.
* Desirable: Previous Band 6 experience; training in management / HR Diploma / degree in a relevant area.
Knowledge & experience
* Essential: Regular experience of taking charge and delegating duties and problem solving throughout shifts; minimum 2 years relevant clinical experience at Band 5; understanding of basic principles of effective budgetary and staff management.
* Desirable: Previous experience in Gastroenterology.
Specific skills
* Essential: Demonstrated evidence of well‑developed clinical practice; ability to prioritise own workload and that of others; ability to take charge and delegate duties effectively; ability to act as an advocate to service users.
Professional development & education
* Essential: Demonstrated commitment to professional development; ability to educate others; audit and quality skills; effective verbal and written communication tailored to patients, staff and relatives.
Leadership & management skills
* Essential: Ability to supervise Registered Nurses, HCAs and students effectively through monitoring, feedback, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice; appraisal of staff in line with Trust Appraisal Policy; effective budgeting practice with appropriate documentation.
