The Band 6 Junior Sister will provide high-quality, evidence-based, child-centred nursing care to children and their families within the outpatient setting. They will play a key role in the daily management and coordination of the department, acting as an effective clinical leader, mentor, and role model for junior staff. They will contribute to service development and ensure the delivery of safe and effective patient care
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to liaise appropriately with all key members of the multi-disciplinary team and service users related to the speciality.
·To be responsible for all aspects of patient care including the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of direct patient care.

·To support the Senior management to monitor the safety and quality of care for patients.
·To be responsible for the day-to-day management of the ward.
·To manage a delegated group of Band 2, 3 and 5 staff ensuring compliance of mandatory training and appraisal requirements.
·To ensure a positive focused service incorporating patients’ feedback to maintain and improve patient care.

Main Responsibilities and Duties
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
·To assess individual care needs, develop, implement and evaluate care given to patients in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
·Act as an advocate for children and their families, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are upheld in line with NHS policies
·Provide appropriate emotional support to children and families, particularly during challenging times such as diagnosis or complex procedure
·Assess children's health as they arrive and rapidly respond to any immediate health or safety issues.
·Provide comprehensive health promotion information and education to children and families on various health topics, including condition-specific information.
·To provide efficient, effective and evidence based nursing care to children and young people within the hospital setting.
·Proactively safeguard the welfare of children, adhering to all safeguarding procedures and policies, and attending relevant training
·To perform nursing procedures to a high standard in accordance with the GESH Clinical Practice Guidelines and policies and to ensure that these policies and procedures are understood and adhered to by all staff within own management responsibility.
·To be competent in the recognition and management of life threatening emergencies in children and be able to carry these out in the hospital setting.
·To be responsible for highlighting and identification of child protection concerns to the team leader/ child protection lead and actioning concerns through child protection procedures. To ensure the team adhere to the child protection policies and guidelines.
·To maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records, using appropriate documentation on iclip, and ensure their confidentiality and safe keeping in accordance with the NMC and trust guidelines.
·To ensure safe custody and administration of drugs according to GESH policy and procedures including intravenous and central venous medication.
·To organise workload in line with clinical priorities.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENTS
·To participate in the assessment, planning and provision of skilled nursing care in negotiation with the child and their families / carers.
·To work in partnership with parents and other carers, empowering them to assist in safely caring for their child within the hospital setting and if necessary at home.
·To communicate with patients and their carers with empathy and reassurance regarding, assessment, care and treatment.
·To support children and their families by linking with the statutory, voluntary and associated services available on a individual basis.
·To ensure effective liaison with other agencies, as deemed appropriate, relevant to the child's needs.
·To liaise closely with the MDT both in the community and the hospital settings to provide a holistic approach to meeting the needs of the child and the family.
·To act as an advocate for the children and their families.
·To participate in the safe and effective transfer of patients to adult services with the support of the senior team.
·To teach children and their families using evidence-based practise ensuring that the teaching is relevant and up to date. Ensure teaching programmes are tailored to meet the needs of the family.
·To promote healthy lifestyles by using opportunities to deliver health education and to participate in relevant local events.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT
·To report and action clinical and non-clinical incidents in line with Trust and departmental risk management policies.
·To develop skills to be able to investigate incidents, accidents and complaints implementing corrective actions where necessary in consultation with the sister / charge nurse.
·To participate in the governance of the department in areas including risk management, research and audit activities.
·To take a lead in the audit of principles of the Fundamentals of care, and implement the action plans required.
·To keep abreast of updated clinical practises, guidelines and policies and ensure the team remain updated and adhere to the policies and guidelines.
·To remain aware of current developments in nursing, the health service and specialist practises.
·To adapt, and quickly respond to changes in service, patients or departmental need.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL AND PHYSICAL RESOURCES
·To assess the need for equipment within the hospital environment, and as necessary provide training for parents and carers in the safe and effective use.
·Ensure all equipment is maintained and serviced in accordance with guidelines from the Medical Devices Agency.
·To be responsible for the care and safe handling of equipment and accessories in the area of work.
·To ensure pay and non-pay expenditure is kept to a minimum whilst maintaining a high standard of patient care.
·To develop skills on understanding the system of monitoring the staff and non-staff budget.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR LEADING AND MANAGING
·Effectively delegate duties to Band 5 nurses and healthcare support workers, providing clinical supervision and support.
·To participate in appraisal and performance review meetings of junior staff.
·To act as a role model and resource to others in clinical and professional matters.
·Monitor the safety and quality of care, contributing to the reduction of healthcare-acquired infections, reporting incidents, and implementing recommendations for action.
·Act as a mentor and clinical supervisor/preceptor for junior staff, including pre-registration student nurses, newly qualified staff, healthcare support workers, and new starters, facilitating their learning and professional development.
·To attend senior nurse meetings and feedback to the team as required.

·Ensuring all staff attend mandatory training.
·To work with other colleagues in supporting / mentoring student nurses during their placements and by being a preceptor for junior staff.
·To assist the sister / charge nurse in establishing an active learning environment for all grades of staff within the department allowing staff to develop to their full potential.
