Senior Tax Accountant
West Midlands | Up to £55,000
If January felt like survival mode rather than professional work, this might be the role you were hoping existed.
Many experienced tax seniors reach a point where they’re capable of advising clients… but most of their time is still spent clearing compliance deadlines and firefighting during busy season.
This role is different.
I’m working with a well-established independent practice where tax is treated as a service line, not just a compliance function. The partners actively involve the tax team in client discussions and planning — not just after year-end, but throughout the year.
What your working year would actually look like
Instead of a constant cycle of returns and last-minute pressure, the workload is structured and planned. Compliance still matters, but it isn’t the whole job.
You’ll manage your own mixed portfolio of corporate and personal tax clients and be trusted to advise them directly.
Your work will include:
• Reviewing corporation tax and self-assessment returns
• Providing tax planning advice to owner-managed businesses
• Supporting clients with HMRC enquiries
• Advising on remuneration planning and tax efficiency
• P11Ds, PAYE Settlement Agreements and VAT queries
• Working alongside partners on advisory projects
• Mentoring junior staff
You won’t just prepare answers — you’ll be part of the conversations with clients.
Why people join (and stay)
The firm is independent, stable and relationship-led. Clients are long-standing and the partners prioritise sensible deadlines and realistic workloads. Busy season exists — it’s tax — but it’s managed rather than chaotic.
This is a role for someone who wants:
• more advisory exposure
• autonomy with clients
• recognition for experience
• and a clear step towards Manager level
What they’re looking for
• Around 6+ years UK practice tax experience
• Corporate and personal tax knowledge
• Qualified or part-qualified (ACA / ACCA / CTA / AAT)
• Confidence speaking directly with clients
This role is practice-based; in-house tax backgrounds won’t be suitable.
The package
• Salary up to £55,000 depending on experience
• 23 days holiday + bank holidays
• Ongoing study support if required
• Long-term progression within the firm
This isn’t a volume compliance position.
It’s a chance to move from “doing the tax work” to becoming a trusted adviser to clients.
If you’d like to understand what the firm and team are like before making any decisions, I’m happy to have a confidential conversation
