Job overview
The Acute Medicine department is looking to appoint enthusiastic, highly motivated and dynamic Consultant colleagues to join our team in Acute Medicine at North Manchester Hospital. The consultants in our current team have varied sub‑specialty interests including rheumatology, infectious diseases, respiratory, gastroenterology and emergency medicine. We are supported by a large multidisciplinary team of junior trainees, clinical fellows, ACPs and a dedicated physiotherapy, occupational therapy and NMP pharmacy team. We have an excellent record of developing and retaining senior nursing colleagues for our unit.
This is an exciting time to join North Manchester General Hospital. It will soon be rebuilt as a health hub, offering a rare opportunity to contribute to the new future of the site. The hospital is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, which delivers care to approximately 750,000 people across 10 hospital sites and is focused on addressing health inequalities.
Main duties of the job
We are constantly developing the acute medical unit and expanding consultant support to ensure consultant‑delivered care is available 7 days a week. The post will include weekend daytime sessions, with 1:8 cover, and will be based at North Manchester General Hospital. The role provides senior medical support to our 53 Medical Assessment Unit beds spread across two wards, and our Ambulatory Care Unit.
The post is offered at 10 pairs of sessions (PAs); however we actively encourage 1.5 PAs in other specialties such as:
* Respiratory Medicine
* Care of the Elderly – Frailty sessions
* Diabetes and Endocrine
* Infectious Diseases
* Other specialty sessions within MFT

Person specification
Education / Qualifications
* Primary medical qualification (e.g., MBChB)
* Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise
* On the Specialist Register, holding a CCT or expect to do within 6 months of interview
* Holding the MRCP or evidence of equivalent training and experience
* A higher degree such as an MD is desirable
* Attendance at advanced communication skills or similar course
Experience
* Appropriate home‑office status to undertake a career post in the UK
* Clinical expertise in Acute Medicine and broad knowledge of general medicine
* Publication of research articles, demonstrating understanding of research methodology (desirable)
* Evidence of teaching and training experience to support clinical supervisor status
Skills & Knowledge
* Evidence of organisational and clinical leadership skills
* Good verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to work well within a team
* Clinical governance understanding
* Clinical expertise in a specialist area of Acute Medicine
* Experience in leading service change or improvement
