We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician, preferably with experience in Salmonella testing in poultry to join our growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting microbiological testing of poultry samples to detect and identify Salmonella spp. in accordance with regulatory standards and internal quality protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

* Responsible for the accurate receipt and registration of laboratory samples, data entry into the Laboratory Information System, and preparation of all relevant paperwork.
* Perform Salmonella testing on poultry samples for both NCP and voluntary purposes, including environmental swabs, feed, tissues, and faecal samples.
* Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and biosafety protocols for sample handling, culture techniques, enrichment, selective plating, biochemical confirmation, and serotyping.
* Entering all results into the relevant platforms with accuracy and within required timeframes
* Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as incubators, autoclaves, pipettes, etc.
* Ensure accurate documentation of test results, quality control data, and maintenance logs in compliance with ISO 17025 or similar standards.
* Interpret microbiological results and report findings to the supervisor or designated personnel within required turnaround times.
* Participate in proficiency testing and internal/external audits as needed.
* Assist in the development, validation, and improvement of testing methodologies for both Salmonella testing and other laboratory microbiological methods as required.
* Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment in compliance with safety and quality regulations. Ensuring no cross contamination through adherence to SOPs and routine swabbing of the lab itself.

Qualifications:

Required:

* Minimum 1–2 years of laboratory experience, ideally within microbiology.
* Knowledge of government and UKAS 17025 pathogen testing protocols
* Experience with aseptic technique and microbial culture methods.
* Proficient Microsoft office and using laboratory information management systems.

Preferred:

* Knowledge of Salmonella testing in poultry or food microbiology.
* Familiarity with regulatory requirements in the poultry or food production industry.

* Ability to work independently, weekend lone working and in a team environment
* Excellent time management and organizational abilities
* Strong communication and documentation skills

Working Conditions:

* Work is performed in a laboratory setting with exposure to biological samples and potential pathogens.
* May involve standing for extended periods and occasional manual handling.
* Thursday – Monday inclusive of weekend, 8.30-5pm

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: £25,396.80 per year
