Clinical Educators plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safe, effective, and high-quality education of medical students within paediatrics. Acting as the educational lead for allocated programmes, the postholder designs, delivers, and evaluates teaching across a range of clinical and classroom settings, using expertise in curriculum planning, simulation, and clinical practice. By supporting students in the acquisition of essential clinical, communication, and reasoning skills, the educator safeguards patient safety, ensuring that learners are competent and appropriately supervised when engaging with children and families. The role also has a strong pastoral component, guiding students through challenges and escalating concerns where professionalism or wellbeing may impact on safe practice. In addition, the educator contributes to educational governance, aligning local teaching with GMC standards and national policy, while networking with senior clinicians to embed education into daily practice.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Educator will lead, plan, and deliver high-quality education for medical students within paediatrics, ensuring that teaching aligns with national curricula and Trust standards. They will design and facilitate learning through bedside teaching, simulation, clinical skills sessions, and classroom-based teaching, adapting methods to meet diverse learner needs. The postholder will act as the main point of contact for students during placements, providing supervision, feedback, and support to ensure clinical competence is achieved safely. They will monitor learner progress, conduct assessments, and escalate concerns regarding professionalism or fitness to practice where required, safeguarding both patients and students. In addition, the educator will provide pastoral support, helping students navigate academic and personal challenges that may affect their learning. They will contribute to educational governance, evaluate learner feedback, and implement improvements to enhance the quality of the student experience. The role also involves close collaboration with senior clinicians, medical schools, and training bodies to integrate education into clinical practice.
