SEN / SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Chorley
Salary: £90 - £100 per day
Hours: Full-time
About the Role
We are seeking a SEN / SEMH Teaching Assistant to support secondary-aged pupils with a range of Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
The role involves working with students following different learning pathways, including GCSE subjects and Functional Skills, supporting both academic progress and emotional regulation.
Key Responsibilities
Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEN/SEMH needs
Support students working towards GCSEs and Functional Skills qualifications
Assist pupils to access learning, manage emotions, and engage positively in lessons
Support behaviour regulation using trauma-informed and restorative approaches
Work closely with teachers to adapt learning materials and strategies
Help implement EHCP targets, behaviour plans, and individual support plans
Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to promote confidence and resilience
Support pupils during transitions, breaks, and unstructured times where needed
Liaise with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals as required
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
Experience working with children or young people with SEN and/or SEMH needs
An understanding of the challenges faced by pupils with emotional and behavioural needs
A calm, patient, and consistent approach
Strong communication and teamwork skills
The ability to remain resilient in a challenging but rewarding environment
A genuine passion for supporting young people to achieve their potential
Desirable (but not essential):
Experience in a secondary school, PRU, or alternative provision
Knowledge of GCSE and Functional Skills pathways
Training in de-escalation, behaviour management, or trauma-informed practice
