Nurse Endoscopist

Be an autonomous independent practitioner in accordance with defined protocols. Provide specialist advice and training to health care professionals and multidisciplinary teams.
Be responsible for leading and developing a highly specialised nursing service for patients undergoing assessment and investigation for upper and lower gastrointestinal disease, including upper GI endoscopy and polypectomy. Develop highly specialised skills in relation to gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures through advanced nursing practice, underpinned by evidence-based, clinically effective best practice.
Main duties of the job
Undertake in-patient and out-patient gastroscopy, colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy procedures, operate highly complex equipment and interpret and act upon results to reduce delay in diagnosis, treatment and subsequent discharge.
Provide endoscopy reports and treatment recommendations to GPs and clinicians regarding patient outcomes.
Exercise leadership in the development and implementation of policy and care pathways/journeys with stakeholders to improve the patient's experience of endoscopy.
In negotiation with multidisciplinary teams within the Trust, develop and assist in implementation and evaluation of appropriate policies, protocols and guidelines to ensure safe, equitable and consistent practices.
Provide an innovative specialist nurse-led GI diagnostic service acting as an autonomous practitioner liaising with surgeons and physicians to contribute to strategic development of endoscopy services to ensure high standards of care are delivered to patients.
Provide specialist clinical knowledge and judgment in diagnosing and managing patient conditions, including initiating treatment and providing and monitoring specialist care packages/plans when required.
Understand and respect patients' right to participate in decisions about their care, ensuring any care plan is based around individual needs and ensuring the service is responsive to changing needs.

Leadership and Improvement Training
South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust offers leadership and improvement training to all new staff. Person Specification
* 5 years experience of GI, colorectal or endoscopy nursing with 2 years at band 6 or above.
* Highly developed specialist knowledge of disease‑related conditions over a number of subject areas.
* Experience of clinical trials.
* Awareness of principles of the audit cycle/research skills.
* Awareness of the developing role of nursing in the modernisation context.
* Formal or informal teaching experience.
* Develop skills in percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement to provide a nurse-led service.
* Polypectomy training at a recognised JAG accredited endoscopy training school.
Qualifications & Training
* Registered General Nurse (RGN) and have completed a BSc (Hons) degree.
* Educated to Masters level or evidence to demonstrate equivalent experience, or willing to work towards a Masters level qualification.
Experience
* Perform upper and lower GI endoscopies to JAG-accredited standards.
* Prescribe medications (if NMP-qualified) and monitor therapeutic interventions.
* Independently manage a caseload, prioritising emergencies and unexpected clinical needs.
