Social Care Team Manager - Children & Young People - Wolverhampton
Purpose of the Role
City of Wolverhampton Council is seeking a highly experienced Social Care Team Manager to lead a team of social workers within Children's Services. You will provide strategic and operational leadership, ensuring high-quality social work interventions, safeguarding children, and delivering positive outcomes for children and families across the city. You will champion restorative practice, contribute to service development, and foster a high-performance, collaborative culture.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Set team objectives, develop plans, and mobilise staff to meet service priorities.
Support the development and implementation of policies and procedures in line with statutory guidance.
Monitor and report on progress of strategies, ensuring high-quality delivery of children's services.Operational Management
Oversee casework ensuring robust assessment, planning, and review in line with statutory guidance.
Provide supervision, appraisal, and professional development for senior social workers and social workers.
Manage delegated budgets and ensure efficient use of resources.
Act as a Practice Educator, promoting professional practice and restorative approaches across the service.Performance and Quality Assurance
Analyse qualitative and quantitative data to monitor service performance.
Use supervision and personnel processes to ensure statutory compliance and address performance issues.
Maintain high standards of evidence-based, child-focused social work.Partnership Working
Develop strong relationships with multi-agency partners including police, health, education, and voluntary organisations.
Ensure effective communication across the service to promote collaborative working and positive outcomes for children.Leadership and Development
Inspire and motivate teams, modelling child-centred, outcome-focused practice.
Deputise for the Service Manager as required and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
Promote equality, diversity, and anti-discriminatory practice in all aspects of service delivery.
Person Specification
Experience:
Extensive post-qualification experience in complex social work with children and families.
Proven experience managing and supervising social work staff within accountability frameworks.
Experience across a wide range of statutory practice environments in Children's Services.
Experience leading specialist areas of practice and securing colleague support (desirable).Skills:
Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
Ability to manage performance and develop staff professionally.
Excellent communication and partnership working abilities.
Knowledge of evidence-based interventions, systemic approaches, and good social work practice.
Competent in IT and project management (desirable).Knowledge:
Knowledge of childcare legislation, statutory guidance, and Wolverhampton Child Protection Procedures.
Understanding of government, national, and local council priorities and performance frameworks.
Awareness of equal opportunities, diversity, and cultural issues.Qualifications:
Recognised social work qualification and Social Work England registration.
Evidence of continued professional development aligned to the Professional Capabilities Framework.
Advanced training in relevant aspects of practice and a positive enhanced DBS disclosure.
Practice Educator Awards 1 & 2 (or working towards) and management qualification desirable.Personal Qualities & Commitment:
