Overview
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) is seeking an enthusiastic and forward‑thinking Biomedical Scientist (Biochemistry) to join the Biochemical Genetics and Screening Laboratory. The role sits within the Specialist Laboratory Medicine department and involves working in a small, specialised team delivering patient‑focused biochemistry services, including Toxicology, Trace metals, Immunosuppressant Drug Monitoring, Steroid Endocrinology, Haemoglobinopathy Screening, Biochemical Genetics, Newborn Bloodspot Screening and Foetal Anomaly Screening (FASP).
Key Responsibilities
* Perform a wide variety of laboratory techniques and assays (e.g. LC‑MS/MS, GC‑MS, ion exchange HPLC, electrophoresis, thin‑layer chromatography, AutoDELFIA platform).
* Conduct quality control activities (IQC, EQA), maintain and troubleshoot assays, and validate new tests.
* Train and support staff, manage stock control, and order supplies.
* Collaborate effectively with team members and service users, maintaining strong working relationships.
* Contribute to service improvement through technical validation and reporting to section leads.
Qualifications
* Degree (or equivalent) suitable for HCPC registration.
* Registered Biomedical Scientist with a clinical chemistry portfolio (2006 registration onwards) or equivalent. A specialist portfolio in Biochemistry is desirable.
* Competence in a wide range of complex lab procedures and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
Experience
* Post‑registration experience within a relevant speciality.
* Experience with immunosuppressant analysis and use of tandem mass spectrometry.
Additional Requirements
Full registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and possession of a current Clinical Chemistry portfolio are mandatory. The position is full‑time, 1.0 WTE, Band 6, 37.5 hours per week (Annex 21 may apply). Working hours are 08:30‑17:00 Monday–Friday with rotation for Saturday mornings.
