Project Engineering Discipline
The Project Engineering Discipline provides multi-discipline engineering team leadership and coordination across the engineering project lifecycle for Costain’s Nuclear and Defence sectors.
Job Description / Purpose
Location: Manchester Office (3 days), Trawsfynydd Site (2 days)
Costain helps improve people’s lives by creating connected, sustainable infrastructure that enables people and the planet to thrive. We shape, create, and deliver pioneering solutions that transform the performance of the infrastructure ecosystem across the UK. By bringing together our unique mix of construction, consulting, and digital experts, we engineer and deliver sustainable, efficient, and practical solutions.
This role supports Costain on the Reactor Height Reduction Project at Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS), Trawsfynydd Site, North Wales. The 3.5-year project will involve:
* Partial demolition of each Reactor Building (RB), reducing overall height and current asset management liability.
* Delivery of an extensive package of civil new build and remedial works to prolong the durability of retained structures.
As a first-of-its-kind project in the Nuclear Sector, this challenging and exciting project involves a wide supply chain and will significantly reduce uncertainty about the condition of reactor buildings while lessening their visual impact on Snowdonia National Park.
Key Responsibilities
* Coordinate the delivery of multi-discipline engineering design on a major demolition project, including Temporary Works designs, and obtain Design Review sign-off.
* Identify engineering resource requirements and ensure effective utilisation to execute projects according to requirements, targeting maximum productivity and efficiency.
* Ensure all engineers fully understand the detailed scope, basis of design, budget, and programme requirements.
* Coordinate engineering and design interfaces between Costain, project partners, and supply chain partners.
* Manage contractual communications, supporting progress meetings, risk reduction meetings, cost reports, coordinating multi-disciplinary design teams, and closing out contract actions.
* Report regularly to senior operational management on the performance of engineering delivery for the project.
* Maintain a commercial focus, challenging project scope and protecting against uncontrolled scope creep.
* Ensure effective deployment of company engineering delivery processes on projects, including engineering design strategy, master deliverable register, project schedule, work/cost breakdown structure, process safety management, and engineering governance.
* Identify key project and programme risks early and mitigate them where possible; escalate issues and blockers immediately.
* Ensure all services comply fully with Client & Costain governance processes, standards, and necessary approvals.
* Develop productive relationships by communicating with colleagues and subordinates, building trust, support, and strong teams.
* Lead by example, demonstrating the Company’s values and behaviours, and commit to the highest standards of safe and ethical behaviour to ensure safe, reliable operations and client satisfaction.
* Ensure personal and corporate compliance with Health and Safety policies, relevant legislation, and client/company requirements, working safely and preventing harm to self, colleagues, clients, subcontractors, and the environment.
* Collaborate with business development, work-winning, and marketing functions to develop and tender new opportunities; develop and review engineering strategy, basis of estimate, engineering manhour estimate, schedule, risk register, engineering gates, and technical proposals.
* Support the Discipline Manager in developing and mentoring other members of the project engineering department.
* Support the Discipline Manager in maintaining and improving project engineering corporate processes, including workflows, methods, competency, software systems, technical standards, and ensure project lessons learnt are captured and embedded.
