Consultant Psychiatrist - Mortimer Ward & Crisis Home Treatment

The closing date is 26 March 2026

We are looking to recruit a dynamic, motivated consultant to work in the Inpatients/Crisis Team based at the Stonebow Unit, Herefordshire. You will cover approximately 10 patients on the mixed general adult Mortimer Ward and one weekly Crisis Team, and be supported by two junior doctors, an ANP and/or an ST4 trainee. Mortimer Ward opened in November 2024 and provides a modern, therapeutic environment for acute adult patients. You will be delivering ECT alongside other consultants and join one in eleven on-call rota. There is a dedicated office and a secretary. The county of Herefordshire is in the Wye Valley and has the Forest of Dean, the Malvern Hills, and the Brecon Beacons National Park within easy access to provide an excellent work/life balance. Transport links are provided by the M50 which links with M4 and M5 and there are direct train routes to London, Birmingham and Cardiff. The Trust is committed to delivering the best mental health care and supporting the leadership development of its clinicians. The overall sessional pay with on-call commitments will be 11 PA + 1 PA retention + 1% + 3%.

Main duties of the job

Mortimer Ward is a 20‑bedded mixed‑gender ward, admitting on average five patients a week, 60% of whom are detained. The two consultants covering the ward share the caseload; the vacancy is for covering the South of Herefordshire. This post is well‑established and has been filled for many years by long‑term colleagues; it became available due to an early retirement of the previous consultant. There is a weekly local teaching programme and a Trust Grand Rounds monthly. You will be supported in your CPD and the development of a special interest. You will be joining a supportive, cohesive group of consultants who work together to provide services locally.

* To undergo annual appraisal, develop a personal development plan and remain in good CPD standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and to agree a job plan with the Clinical Director/Associate Medical Director, working towards re‑licensing and revalidation.
