PROJECT ENGINEER (ON-SITE INFRASTRUCTURE & CABLING SPECIALIST)

Reports to: Head of Technical Services
We’re seeking a hands‑on Project Engineer with a strong focus on on‑site installation and infrastructure delivery to join our growing technical team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with experience in structured cabling, Wi‑Fi deployment, and data cabinet installation to take ownership of technical projects from survey through to completion.
While some hybrid work is available, this is primarily a field‑based role – travel and overnight stays are mandatory. Candidates must be confident working in active client environments and able to deliver high‑quality installations safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
On‑Site Project Delivery
* Carry out structured data cabling installations (Cat5e, Cat6, fibre) including cable routing, termination, and testing.
* Install and configure Wi‑Fi access points, ensuring optimal coverage and performance.
* Mount and configure data cabinets, patch panels, and related network infrastructure hardware.
* Conduct site surveys to assess cabling routes, equipment locations, and installation requirements.
* Prepare and adhere to Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) before attending site.
* Liaise with clients, site managers, and internal teams to ensure smooth project delivery and minimal disruption.
Project Coordination
* Plan and manage project timelines, resources, and equipment to deliver installations on schedule.
* Work closely with the Head of Technical Services to review drawings, plans, and specifications prior to site work.
* Document all installations accurately, including as‑built drawings and test results.
Technical & Support Duties
* Assist with the setup and configuration of switches, routers, and wireless controllers as part of project delivery.
* Support infrastructure upgrades and relocations for client sites, including cabinet reorganisation and patching.
* Troubleshoot and resolve network or installation‑related issues during and after deployment.
Skills & Qualifications
* Proven experience in on‑site IT or network infrastructure installation – ideally within an MSP or structured cabling environment.
* Strong knowledge of structured cabling standards (Cat5e, Cat6, fibre).
* Wi‑Fi installation and configuration expertise.
* Network hardware knowledge (switches, patch panels, cabinets).
* Health & Safety compliance, including RAMS preparation.
* Site surveying and technical documentation skills.
* Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, DHCP, DNS, VPN).
* Full UK driving licence (required).
* Excellent communication and customer service skills.
* Ability to work independently and manage multiple on‑site tasks effectively.
* Experience with cable testing and certification.
* Familiarity with Ubiquiti, Cisco, Ruckus or similar Wi‑Fi systems.
* Basic understanding of Microsoft 365 and Azure for integrated deployments.
