Specialist Mental Health Therapist - STARS

The closing date is 19 October 2025

To be responsible for providing high quality therapeutic support and advice to children and young people, parents and families who present with a range of mental health and emotional needs in relation to the child's experience of sexual trauma.


Main duties of the job

To deliver therapeutic support and advice to children, young people and families affected by sexual trauma.

To undertake high quality direct (assessment and therapeutic) and indirect (consultative, advisory and evaluative) specialist support in relation to children, young people and families referred to STARS

To offer therapeutic sessions to a child or young people, on a group, family or individual basis, including pre-trial support and to review progress of the support provided on a regular basis. This can include evening groups for young people.

To offer support and advice to the carers of children and young people affected by sexual trauma. This may include individual, group or family work.

To undertake ongoing evaluation of the outcome of the interventions provided.

To be committed to providing a high quality child focused service for children and young people affected by sexual trauma, highlighting and respecting the wishes of the child or young person.

Job responsibilities

To work alongside other professionals (e.g. schools, other mental health support teams, children's services, Surrey SARC and child protection agencies) in planning how best to support a child and the child's family.

To assist in STARS training events and to offer highly specialist advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals working with children and families who have been affected by childhood sexual trauma.

To refer people to other services where appropriate (e.g. school counsellor, ACT, Community Mental Health Teams, Youth Services)

To ensure complex and sensitive information is managed appropriate.

To communicate in a professional and sensitive manner with other agencies, with a view to maintaining the appropriate level of confidentiality.

To have an expert awareness of safeguarding issues and to be clear about roles and responsibilities to report, respond to and share information in relation to safeguarding.

To promote early intervention and active engagement amongst the network, being an ambassador for mental wellbeing and providing expertise in emotional and mental health across the system in order to effect better outcomes for Children and young people.

To be responsible for managing and prioritising own workload of children and adolescents with emotional well-being issues and more complex emerging mental health issues often involving additional problem areas, such as self-harming, depression, trauma and attachment issues.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* A relevant professional registration in the following disciplines Nursing, Social Work, Psychotherapy, Arts therapy
* A professional registration is essential (e.g. NMC, SWE, UKCP, HCPC)
* Further appropriate post registration training in the speciality of child and adolescent mental health e.g systemic Family therapy, play, art or drama therapy, Group Work


Experience

* Minimum of 3 years' post qualifying experience of working with young people with mental health needs.
* Knowledge of the effects of abuse on children and young people and their families and the dynamics of abusive behaviour
* Experience of direct work with children and young people who have experienced sexual abuse/sexual trauma
* Experience and knowledge of child safeguarding
* Experience of working with other agencies e.g. Social Services and Education.
* Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
* Experience of working with primary health care professionals
* Knowledge of relevant mental health and children's legislation.
* Detailed knowledge of national training initiatives and priorities in respect of young people and mental health
