Our Opportunity:
We have exciting opportunities for Groundswork Apprentices to work alongside our team of experts at our specialist research and testing centre here at Spadeadam.
You will join us on a permanent contract during August, with your apprenticeship programme formally commencing from early September and lasting approximately 18 months and upon completion you will be awarded the industry recognised Groundswork Apprenticeship standard.
During your apprenticeship you will gain real practical experience, working onsite alongside colleagues here at Spadeadam four days a week, as well as attending Lakes College (near Workington – travel costs are reimbursed) one day a week, where our specialist apprenticeship Training Provider will equip you with the core knowledge, skills and behaviours required. You will also have access to lots of online support materials and 1-2-1 sessions with your tutor to help bolster your learning.
As a Groundswork Apprentice you will get involved in a wide variety of activities, supporting the unique work that we do here at Spadeadam. We will help develop your knowledge and experience in setting out and preparing the sub-surfaces ready for the structural work to begin, installing drainage systems, concreting, constructing roads and pathways and carrying out the finished hard landscaping. We will also help you work safely and securely in compliance with our policies and procedures, and learn all about critical health, safety and welfare legislation. In addition, you will also learn how to safely use and maintain a wide variety of power tools, machinery and industrial equipment.
It is important to understand that the nature of our work means that you will be working outside, in all weather, supporting our delivery teams with their projects. Our Groundswork apprenticeship is therefore aimed at practical individuals, who love working outdoors and looking to develop themselves in a trade. The projects you will support, the environment you will work in and the people you will engage with, make this role like no other. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but the opportunity to be part of making a real difference to people’s lives and the future of our planet is immense.
On our Apprenticeship programme you’ll be stretched but always supported, so don’t worry if right now a lot of what you will be doing sounds very complicated and new! You will be surrounded by people committed to helping you learn and develop and providing you with everything you need to succeed.
As you develop, you’ll have the opportunity to gain further specialist training and additional qualifications to help you progress and become involved in different construction and engineering projects at our world-famous in Cumbria.
