About this role We are seeking an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant to deliver high‑quality home learning provision for pupils across all pathways who are unable to attend school long‑term due to medical, physical, or complex needs. These may include pupils recovering from surgeries, experiencing long‑term illness, or whose conditions make attending school unsafe or impractical. You will visit pupils in their homes to provide personalised teaching, ensuring their learning continues safely and effectively while they are absent from school. This role requires someone who is confident working independently, can adapt teaching for a wide range of needs, and is able to travel city‑wide; access to reliable transport is essential. You will work closely with class teachers, pathway leads, therapists, medical teams, and families to ensure that each pupil’s home learning reflects their personalised plan, medical guidance, and safeguarding requirements. When home learning commitments allow, you will also support teaching and learning within school. Key responsibilities include: Deliver personalised teaching sessions in pupils’ homes for those who are long‑term sick or unable to attend school due to medical, physical, or complex needs. Plan, deliver, and assess home learning based on pupils’ individual learning plans and pathways. Adapt teaching to suit a wide range of abilities, communication systems, and medical needs. Travel across Birmingham to provide home‑based education; maintain accurate visit records and safeguarding documentation. Work closely with families to create a consistent approach between home and school. Liaise with teachers, therapists, and medical professionals to ensure home learning is safe, appropriate, and aligned with current medical advice. Provide interventions in school when home learning visits are not required. Model excellent practice and offer guidance to Teaching Assistants as needed. Support with moving, handling, or personal care where appropriate and aligned with training. Uphold safeguarding procedures during all home visits and interactions. We are looking for candidates who: Hold HLTA status or a relevant Level 4 qualification. Have substantial experience supporting pupils with SEND and/or complex medical, physical or learning needs. Can plan, deliver and assess individualised home learning independently in a range of home environments. Possess excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work professionally with families and multidisciplinary teams. Can adapt teaching approaches confidently for pupils who are long‑term sick or unable to access school. Demonstrate high expectations for learning, engagement and behaviour across all settings.
