The Complications of Excessive Weight Team are seeking an experienced Paediatric Specialist Nurse to join their team.

You will be promoting good health choices to enable Children and Young People with excessive weight to reach their optimum level of health, independence, social and psychological/emotional well-being.

You will have an exciting opportunity in the continual development and progression of our Complications of Excess Weight service. The service, originally funded by NHS England, is one of the 15 national sites delivering specialist clinics for children aged between 2 - 18 years who are experiencing health complications related to severe obesity. The service is led by a Consultant Paediatrician, a specialist nurse, health coach and dietitian.

You will be involved in empowering CYP and their families to self- manage comorbidities bought on by excessive weight, by supporting them with structured education whilst they are on the 2 year pathway.

You will have knowledge of the different types of treatment available, including weight loss medication, Continuous Glucose Monitoring, EVIRA and Tanita scales.

As part of a MDT, you will be involved in continuous improvement for care provided in hospital and community settings. This is supported by attending regular network meetings to ensure the care provided follows the local and national guidelines.

Main duties of the job

A Paediatric Complications of Excessive Weight Specialist Nurse supports children, young people and their families with their ongoing management of excessive weight, within both hospital and community settings. They will work as part of a multi- disciplinary team, including consultants, dietitians, physio and health coaches ensuring that current, evidence based information and advice is available.

You will be responsible for ensuring the planning, delivery and evaluation of care to meet the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of patients, You will have an active role in the delivery of structured education to families and other agencies.

You would be joining a team of experienced and forward-thinking Specialist Nurses, Consultant Paediatricians, Specialist Dietitians, Physio, Health Coach and Administrative staff alongside working within a large supportive Children's MDT.

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

1. To provide specialist advice, support and education for the child/young person, and their families/carers whilst they are on the 2 year pathway
2. Provide ongoing care and establish professional trusting relationships with individual patients, families/carers. Support the child/young person and family with their ongoing management of excessive weight, within both hospital and community settings.
3. Have an active role in the delivery of different types of treatment available to support the patient to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

4. RN8 or RNC Children’s Nursing Posts
5. Degree in Paediatric Nursing, Specialist Practitioner degree or equivalent
6. Experience of working as a paediatric Complications of Excessive Weight Specialist Nurse
7. Community Nursing Experience

Desirable criteria

8. Non- medical prescribing qualification or willingness to undertake
9. NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

10. Extensive experience of care for the child/young person with excessive weight
11. Knowledge of treatment options for child with excessive weight.
12. Awareness of changes within Nursing practice
13. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
14. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures

Desirable criteria

15. Knowledge of ethical issues
16. Knowledge of Leadership and Management
17. Research and Development
18. Experience of mentorship and ability to identify learning and development needs
