Job Role: Lead/Principal Hardware & Firmware Engineer
Work pattern: Hybrid, 2-3 days working in our Warwick office
Nicholas Associates has an exciting opportunity to work for an innovative & award-winning client within the tech industry.
Overview:
We are looking for a talented and experienced Lead/Principal Hardware & Firmware Engineer to work on the hardware and embedded software for their exciting range of measurement products.
You will be part of our strong research and development team, which includes electronics hardware, embedded software, cloud & backend software, and mobile app development. The work you do will be crucial to the success of our current and future products in the marketplace.
You will have the opportunity to lead the hardware/firmware team and manage their work packages. Although this is a technical role at the outset, it could develop into a line management role for the right applicant.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Architect and design robust products from concepts and specifications, aligning with requirements and bringing innovative solutions to complex problems.
2. Technically lead and mentor a small team, providing hands-on development and support.
3. Oversee PCB design and layout, ensuring best practices and high-quality results.
4. Define and specify test plans for hardware verification and production testing.
5. Identify and implement improvements to test and diagnostic processes.
6. Support environmental and EMC testing during qualification.
7. Perform and oversee circuit analysis including power, tolerance, and reliability.
8. Capture design requirements in collaboration with other teams.
9. Deliver digital electronics designs from architecture to production, preferably with a focus on battery-powered, MCU-based applications.
10. Be technically fluent in hardware, firmware, and manufacturing engineering.
11. Oversee PCB design & layout.
12. Have a good understanding of embedded C for microcontrollers.
13. Familiarity with standard interface buses such as SPI, I2C, UART & USB.
14. Consider DFx principles (design for safety, testability, and manufacturability) in product development.
15. Knowledge of test & verification techniques supporting product lifecycle development.
16. Experience managing a small team and/or work packages is highly desirable.
17. Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering or equivalent experience.
18. Experience with environmental and EMC testing during qualification.
19. Experience with battery-powered Bluetooth or Wi-Fi devices.
20. Some experience in analogue electronics design is advantageous.
21. Experience in a smaller company or start-up environment with broader responsibilities.
22. Technical fluency in firmware, mechanical, and manufacturing engineering.
23. Experience with certification processes (CE and FCC).
